Dark Horse Comics will be publishing a prequel comic to the upcoming Netflix and Mattel Television Masters of the Universe: Revelation show. The comic book will only be four issues long and serve as a prequel to the Netflix series, which is said to be a much darker version of Masters of the Universe. The upcoming show is being called the Games of Thrones version of He-Man.

Revelation will be the fourth cartoon based on the Masters of the Universe, which features epic sword and sorcery storylines that typically revolves around Prince Adam using the Sword of Power to turn into He-Man as he fights alongside his allies against Skeletor and his army on Eternia. Due to come out this year on Netflix, Masters of the Universe: Revelation is a direct sequel to the original 80s cartoon. Despite the change in tone from a comedic cartoon to a darker anime-styled series, showrunner Kevin Smith announced the character designs have not changed much from their original interpretations.

Dark Horse Comics released the cover images for the first issue of Masters of the Universe: Revelation and has revealed more information about the creative team and comic's plot. Penning the books are the show's executive producers, Kevin Smith and Rob David, along with the show's writer Tim Sheridan. David, in particular, has a long history with the series, working with Mattel as well as having been the creative director and writer for DC Comics’ Masters of the Universe-related releases that ran from 2012-2020, which included He-Man crossing over with Batman, the Thundercats, and many other surprising faces.

The artist and colorist for the interiors of the mini-series is Mindy Lee (Crimson LotusBounty). The main cover for the first issue was done by Stjepan Sejic (He-Man: The Eternity War) and Dave Wilkins will be doing the main cover art for the rest of the mini-series. The first issue will also have a variant by the Eisner award-winning team of Mike Mignola (Hellboy, B.P.R.D.) and Dave Stewart (Rorschach, Hellboy in Hell). There are still more variant covers yet to be revealed for future issues that will feature artwork from Bill Sienkiewicz, Walt Simonson along with Laura Martin, and others that have not been announced.

He the official synopsis from Dark Horse Comics:

In the comic book, following a vicious Orlax attack on his father King Randor, He-Man learns the creature is linked to the origin of the sword of power. To save Randor and put an end to the chaos, He-Man embarks on an epic journey that pits him against his longtime foes Skeletor and Evil-Lyn, and sees Teela take the reins of a powerful legacy.

Sadly, it looks like neither the show nor its comic book counterpart will be part of the same universe as Netflix's other original Masters of the Universe property, She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, which is a real shame. Hopefully, that show can get a prequel or preferably sequel comic book treatment like this so fans can get more She-Ra in addition to the adventures of He-Man. In the meantime, get the first issue of Masters of the Universe: Revelation in comic book stores on July 7, 2021, followed by additional issues on August 11, September 9, and October 13, 2021.
