Despite being a collection of all three games, Mass Effect Legendary Edition cuts out Mass Effect 3's multiplayer. Although many have written it off as something tacked on to Mass Effect 3's original release, the multiplayer and a companion app played an actual role in the game's campaign. Although they could be ignored, these two factors impacted the final hours of the game in a tangible way by increasing a player's Galactic Readiness for the Reaper invasion. With those elements absent in the remastered collection, BioWare has come up with an alternative.

A new EA blog post reveals those who want to the better endings after Mass Effect 3's finale will have to either successfully complete virtually everything in the game or play through the entire trilogy in order to improve their Galactic Readiness to the fullest amount in Mass Effect Legendary Edition. Playing through the first two games and carrying progress over will give players an easier time achieving one of the better endings, essentially meaning that the more content that's completed, the better chance players have at saving the galaxy. Most importantly, the Mass Effect 3: Extended Cut's ending is now the default ending, which overwrote the original Mass Effect 3 ending after it stirred immense controversy.

Mass Effect Legendary Edition

Multiplayer is not the only thing missing from this collection, as Mass Effect Legendary Edition is also missing DLC. Rather than EA or BioWare being to blame, the reason for the omission is that the original code for Mass Effect: Pinnacle Station was corrupted with no retrievable backups. While not impossible, it would reportedly take BioWare six months to make it work, and the studio doesn't believe that's feasible for Mass Effect Legendary Edition's development. At the very least, it's not as crucial to the ultimate trilogy ending as Mass Effect 3's multiplayer and mobile app were.

Although it doesn't sound to have to grind for the best ending in Mass Effect 3, it's a reasonable alternative given the lack of its multiplayer complement. It's not entirely clear how many hours it will take to achieve the best ending, but it's not a shock that BioWare made this change given all of Mass Effect Legendary Edition's overhauls. Whether or not this will frustrate players or incentivize them to do as much as possible remains to be seen, but that frustration may be overlooked by fans who have asked for these remasters for so long.
