While many players will be excited to rejoin up with their favorite companions, others may want to try routes they never experienced before. While Urdnot Wrex is one of the most iconic characters in the series, there are all sorts of situations to either gain favor or completely piss off the Krogan. If one takes certain measures throughout the entire trilogy, this can result in one of the biggest betrayals at the tail end of the story.

Preparing the Deception in Mass Effect and Mass Effect 2

Urdnot Wrex lives in Mass Effect 2

The Mass Effect trilogy is all about long-lasting choices. Without proper planning in the first two games, there will be no payoff in the last installment. Therefore it is important to make certain decisions in the first two games and import a proper save into Mass Effect 3.

Keep Wrex Safe

In order for Wrex to be an important figure in Krogan society, he has to remain alive and safe during the first installment of Mass Effect. This means he needs to get out of Virmire unharmed, The most direct approach is to leave him on the Citadel. When conducting the search for Tali, players only need to follow one of the leads on missions Citadel: Garrus or Citadel: Wrex, but are free to leave the other incomplete. Even if Wrex asks to join but is at first declined, he will wait patiently on the Citdel for Shepard to return. In the meantime, players can complete two of Noveria/Ferros/Therum to unlock Virmire. After the story missions on Virmire are cleared, players can go back to the Citadel and recruit Wrex without issue. Players can go as far as to never hire him in the first game, and his fate will still be the same further in the series.

For those that actually want to use Wrex for most of the game, there are two other options. After joining the party, players can talk to Wrex until he talks about his missing family armor that has fallen into the hands of Tonn Actus. Players can then travel to Tuntau in Argos Rho and recover the armor. It is also possible to go straight to Actus without hearing Wrex’s story and receive the armor anyway. Giving the armor to Wrex will keep him loyal.

When landing on Virmire, players will get in a confrontation with Wrex. If players collected his armor, they can convince him to stand down by selecting the dialogue “I Wouldn’t do this otherwise”. For those that didn’t do the quest, they can also have him give up with a Charm or Intimidate check of at least 8. Finally, as a backup if players have not yet completed both Citadel: Garrus and Therum (thus not having Garrus and Liara) then Wrex will automatically calm down.

Prolong the Genophage

The Genophage isn’t fully required to betray Wrex, but it will make some of the later Mass Effect 3 checks easier. Most of the Krogan disease storyline centers around Mass Effect 2 companion Mordin Solus. Players should aim to keep him disloyal by avoiding his personal mission Old Blood. If they do complete the quest, it is better to fully delete Maelon’s research and cull the chances of creating a safe cure.

During the Suicide Mission, players may also want to purposely sacrifice Mordin during the operation. This includes assigning him to poorly suited tasks like hacking or holding the defensive line. He will also perish if brought to the final boss encounter while disloyal. If Mordin does fall in Mass Effect 2, his role will mostly be filled by Padok Wiks from Sur’Kesh.

Double Crossing in Mass Effect 3

Udnot Wrex leads the charge in Mass Effect 3

With a properly imported save from Mass Effect into Mass Effect 2 and then Mass Effect 3, players will be ready to bring the ultimate betrayal to Wrex and the entire Krogan species.

Deception on Tuchanka

Tuchanka is the homeworld of the Krogan. If this current Shepard is truly looking to hurt Wrex, they should ignore the side mission Tuchanka: Bomb. This seemingly side objective is actually key for making sure the main story runs smoothly. Failing to clear it will kill off some of the important characters. During Priority: Tunchanka, players will receive a call from Dalatrass Linron. They will ask Shepard to sabotage the Genophage cure. While players don’t need to respond to her message with a firm yes or no, they will need to keep private Linron’s plans if they want to betray Wrex.

Later in the mission, players will reach The Shroud tower. If players were open with Mordin or Padok about Linron’s plan, the scene will play out automatically and the Genophage will be cured. However, if the plan was never mentioned then Shepard will have a Renegade prompt to kill the STG agent and let the disease run rampant. For the time being, players will receive war assets from both the Krogan and Salarians.

Confrontation on the Citadel

At first it will seem like players have pulled one over on Wrex and the Krogan people. However, after completing story missions Priority: Perseus Veil and Priority: Rannoch players will get a threatening e-mail from Wrex stating he knows what Shepard did. The story will force players back to the Citadel to speak to the Asari councilor and lead to Priority: Thessia. Upon exiting the docking bay back to the Normandy, Wrex will suddenly show up and fly into a rage. This scene changes based on past events like the Urdnot armor’s fate, if Ashley Williams was killed, or if Maelon’s data survived. Players will have several dialogue prompts and interrupt actions, but it always ends in someone (the player or Bailey) killing Wrex. Players will also lose their Krogan related war assets at this point.

This event will further alter other missions that relied on Wrex. For example, Citadel Wards: Ambush will now heavily feature James Vega instead of Wrex. As an added exploit, players can avoid the Citadel docking bay by activating former DLC mission packs like Leviathan. Most of these side quests transfer Shepard straight to the Normandy without the need of taking the lift occupied by Wrex. Players can delay the confrontation so long that Wrex and the Krogans will still help in the final battles of the war.
