Black Swan on The Masked Singer season five hadn't even performed yet, but a small clip of her singing had fans pretty confident they knew her identity, and we agreed. Black Swan's voice may have been an early spoiler to her background as a popular singer, but the clues have all further supported that prediction. Her second performance was Shawn Mendes's hit, "In My Blood," and it had some of the judges on their feet.
After two performances, it has become pretty clear Black Swan is one of season five's frontrunners. With a voice like that, it is no surprise the judges had some impressive celebrity guesses. Ken Jeong guessed The Queen's Gambit star Anya Taylor Joy, based on the chess piece. Jenny McCarthy guessed former girl band member Camilla Cabello, interpreting the five to mean Fifth Harmony and the x clue to mean X Factor. Nicole Scherzinger connected the X Factor clue to singer Leona Lewis.
Who Is Black Swan? Masked Singer Identity Theory
Our theory since her first performance is that Black Swan has to be Jojo Levesque. Jojo's sultry voice fits the singing we've heard so far from Black Swan, and it's hard to think of many singers who can perform like that. Jojo wears black a lot and her beautiful fashion choices also seem to line up with the costume worn by Black Swan. Her last clue package included a clue that said her first crush was D'Angelo. Not only has Jojo covered the 90s singer, but there is a notable quote she gave to Napster about his impact on her. She told Napster that D’Angelo’s Voodoo “blew my mind. It was so rich in songwriting and musicality, subject matter – it just changed me.”
Week 4 Black Swan Clues
Black Swan said she couldn't put into words how thankful she is to the person who gave her life and the confidence she needed to succeed. Visual clues included a black and white swan with a heart over them, followed by a scale with the white swan on one side and the black on the other. The white swan tipped the scale and was then shown sailing away in a boat. They were shown together again in a stream at the bottom of a mountain. There was also a picture of a blue swan and some blue ink or paint in a small jar. There were a nickel and a penny with 2005 shown, then later shown with 2007. During the package, she talked about the road not being easy and having to let go of this person who meant so much, but realizing she was only able to soar because of the wings they gave her and spoke of them reuniting after the split. She said she hopes the performance shows how much they mean to her. She performed "In My Blood" by Shawn Mendes. Her celebrity crush clue was D'Angelo.
All Black Swan's Identity Clues & How They Fit
As we said above, Jojo has both covered D'Angelo and spoken of how pivotal his music was for her. The clues about the steep price to pay fit with the struggles she had in breaking from her record label to get out of a contract she got into at age 12 and to try to get the rights to her early music. She went on to rerecord many of her early songs in the same way singer Taylor Swift did after similar legal battles. The clue that Black Swan had covered a monster confirms our guess. In 2008, Jojo covered "Can't Believe It" by T-Pain, the OG Monster of The Masked Singer. While the judges were correct in their interpretation of the red x meaning X Factor, they just didn't land on the right star. Jojo had, in fact, appeared on X Factor Celebrity. The RV clue was a nod to the movie RV, which she was in. The five was because she toured with Fifth Harmony. The red card could be a nod at her relationship with soccer player Freddy Adu. As the clues keep coming, it is even more clear our pre-show guess of Jojo was accurate.
Previous Black Swan Clues
Cluedle-Doo's clue was that Black Swan has covered a monster. The clue package showed Black Swan in a snow-covered forest. There was a wanted sign for the world's rarest bird with her picture. The R and V were highlighted in the reward voucher written on the bottom. Visual clues included a red chess bishop, an engagement ring, the number five on a pocket watch used by a hypnotist, a red card, and a red x. She said she got caught up and there was a steep price to pay. She said the experience was so far out of her comfort zone, but that is why she's here. She blew everyone away with her rendition of "Barracuda" by Heart.
