New character posters tease the arrival of the first trailer for Mary Queen of Scots, starring Saoirse Ronan as Mary and Margot Robbie as Elizabeth. The Focus Features production drops its first official trailer tomorrow.

Based on John Guy's book Queen of Scots: The True Life of Mary Stuart, the film follows the tumultuous life of the titular Mary, who leaves behind the throne of France to return to her native Scotland in an attempt to reclaim her rightful crown. This brings her into conflict with her cousin Elizabeth I, who sees Mary's presence as a direct threat to her own position as Queen of England. The behind-the-crown drama deals in betrayal, rebellion and conspiracy as rivals Mary and Elizabeth navigate the perils of being female rulers in a world of men.

Directed by Josie Rourke from a script by Beau Willimon (House of Cards), Mary Queen of Scots boasts a pair of Oscar-nominated actresses at the top of its cast. New character posters highlighting three-time nominee Ronan and one-time nominee Robbie have been released ahead of the Focus Features film's first trailer, which is expected to arrive tomorrow. Awash in bold color, and featuring powerful portraits of the movie's two female leads, the above posters could not be more plain in teasing what Mary Queen of Scots is all about. Both images scream: "Oscar season period film with strong female lead performances." Though the contrasting colors clearly play up the conflict between the two women, the way both characters' blue eyes pop subtly hints at the deeper connection between them. Of course, those who know their history know that the conflict between Mary and Elizabeth would ultimately win out over any sense of shared experience they may have felt.

Mary has been brought to life multiple times on film, perhaps most famously in the 1971 film Mary, Queen of Scots starring Vanessa Redgrave. More recently, the character was played by Samantha Morton in 2007's Elizabeth: The Golden Age, starring Cate Blanchett in her second go-around as Elizabeth. Blanchett of course has given the most acclaimed and well-known recent portrayal of Elizabeth I, but there have been numerous other on-screen depictions of the queen, including two by the legendary Bette Davis. Both Ronan and Robbie are formidable performers in their own rights, and will no doubt receive plenty of Oscar buzz heading into the film's release.

In addition to tackling Elizabeth, Robbie has lined up a role as murdered actress Sharon Tate in Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Robbie is also set to reprise the fan-favorite role of Harley Quinn in the DC movie Birds of Prey. Meanwhile, Ronan will re-unite with Lady Bird director Greta Gerwig for a new adaptation of Louisa May Alcott's Little Women.
