Insomniac's reveal of the Marvel's Wolverine game didn't offer many details about what the final product might look like, but there are a couple references hidden in the bar setting that allude to a potential Incredible Hulk appearance. The game's announcement was a complete surprise to video game fans, as Insomniac seems to be working on the title at the same time as Marvel's Spider-Man 2. It's exciting to see the studio branch out into other Marvel properties with the Wolverine game, and a potential appearance of Hulk makes it all the more appealing.

Wolverine actually made his first Marvel comic book appearance in The Incredible Hulk #181, introduced as an anti-hero employed by the Canadian government to help bring down The Hulk. Wolverine interrupts a battle between Hulk and the Wendigo and begins fighting the Green Goliath. For a brief moment, the two pair up to knock the Wendigo unconscious, and then continue their battle until the Hulk knocks Wolverine out and runs away.

Wolverine and the Hulk have had a very tumultuous history in the comics ever since, going back and forth between working as allies and engaging in destructive fights between one another. These fights tend to get extremely violent, considering both have regenerative healing properties and a excess of anger boiling beneath the service that they channel into their attacks. So it was naturally exciting for fans of the two characters to see a couple notable references to their history in the first trailer for Marvel's Wolverine

Wolverine Game Reveal Repeats Common Marvel Movie Trope

The brief teaser shown during September's PlayStation Showcase gave players a glimpse of Logan sitting in a destroyed bar, with enemies littering the floor after a seemingly epic fight. The camera moves behind Wolverine at one point to give fans a glimpse behind the bar where he is sitting, and a license plate is hanging on the lower right of the wall that reads "HLK 181." The first three letters on the plate are clearly a condensed version of The Hulk's name, and the three numerical digits hold the significance of being the aforementioned issue number where Wolverine first fought Hulk in the comics.

Insomniac goes even further with the Hulk connections by having The Princess Bar's cash register read $19.74. This is a nod to the year 1974, which was the year that The Incredible Hulk #181 was originally released and Wolverine made his debut. It's a pretty heavy double reference to The Hulk and Wolverine's linked past that sets up some potentially exciting scenarios for the game. Considering the numerous violent battles that have ensued between the two in the comics, Insomniac could go the route of having The Hulk serve as an antagonist to play into Marvel's Wolverine's mature tone. There's also the potential for an uneasy alliance between the two heroes, and being able to fight alongside Bruce Banner's alter ego as Wolverine could be an extremely fun moment for fans.

Of course, this is still all purely speculation, especially considering there are no real story or gameplay details revealed about the game at this point. Insomniac might not have any intentions of including Hulk in the game either, with the Easter eggs serving as fun references to recognize Wolverine's origins. Nevertheless, the mere thought of the Hulk making an appearance in the more mature story of Marvel's Wolverine is a tantalizing prospect, and the Easter eggs definitely play into the speculation and excitement.
