At the PlayStation Showcase 2021, Marvel's Wolverine video game was revealed by complete surprise, bringing the show's count of Marvel games to two, with the other being Marvel's Spider-Man 2. The reveal was a shock to many, as there haven't been any significant rumblings regarding any unannounced Marvel games. The new title will be the first solo outing for Wolverine in a video game in some time, but his return to the spotlight is little surprise given the character's longtime popularity.

Developed by Insomniac Games, Marvel's Wolverine will be the second Marvel game to get a PlayStation-exclusive title. Insomniac has been building out its own Marvel universe with Spider-Man since 2018 and dropped nods to other Marvel characters in its games, such as Doctor Strange's Sanctum Sanctorum in New York City. Insomniac also announced Marvel's Spider-Man 2 during the PlayStation Showcase, teasing the likes of Venom and Kraven in the trailer. The two games will be set within the same universe, meaning they may crossover at some point.

Insomniac debuted the first look at Marvel's Wolverine at PlayStation Showcase 2021 showing a dive bar ravaged by the titular anti-hero. At the teaser trailer's conclusion, Logan's adamantium claws shoot out from his knuckles as he prepares to finish a bar brawl, in keeping with the character's violent, macho personality. There are no details regarding the story or gameplay of Marvel's Wolverine so far, but it's not hard to imagine what the final game could be like considering Wolverine's melee expertise and well-established lore explored in past comics, movies, and games.

It seems as though Marvel is finally building a game universe, allowing characters to overlap and co-exist. It's unclear where Marvel's Wolverine will take place, as it looks like the character is somewhere in the south or in a rural part of the United States. Perhaps the character will find his way to New York for some reason, but Insomniac hasn't shared any further details on the story as of right now.

One of the most beloved Wolverine games, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, was a violent M-rated hack and slash game, so it'll be interesting to see if Insomniac takes inspiration from that. Insomniac is known for being a bit more family-oriented, but still showed it can make mature games with the Resistance franchise. Fans can also expect to see Wolverine in Marvel's Midnight Suns in 2022, but it won't be the same incarnation of the character.
