Inspired by Marvel's What If...?, an Instagram artist has created a live-action rendering of zombie Captain America. What If is a Disney+ show that reimagines how classic Marvel Cinematic Universe moments might have gone if one major plot point had been different. Jeffrey Wright plays the Watcher, who interacts with every story, and many MCU cast members star alongside him reprising their roles, including Chadwick Boseman, Mark Ruffalo, Jeremy Renner, Sebastian Stan, and Samuel L. Jackson, though some returning MCU characters like Peter Parker have been recast.

Season 1, episode 5, of What If, titled "What If... Zombies?!" explores a world where Ant-Man and the Wasp's Janet van Dyne comes back from the quantum realm carrying a zombie virus. The survivors, including Peter Parker, Okoye, and Bruce Banner must band together in a bid to find a cure for the disease. Those who didn't survive and are wandering the world in zombie form include Iron Man, Doctor Strange, Thanos, Falcon, Scarlet Witch, Wasp, and, of course, Captain America. It's a massive episode that brings almost every MCU character together in one form or another.

On their Instagram, artist spdrmnkyxxiii was inspired by the episode to render a live-action version of zombie Captain America. Even though the artist wishes we saw more of Zombie Cap, their version is certainly leading zombie material. The end result is a chilling image that would fit better in Zack Snyder's Army of the Dead than anywhere in the Marvel universe. View the artwork below:

The popularity of the Zombies episode shows that there is certainly life in the undead concept. Should Marvel ever want to adapt the concept into a live-action film, they should be sure to tap spdrmnkyxxiii right away for some concept art. If every episode of the series garners this kind of response from fans, the MCU can definitely find itself hundreds of new exciting avenues to go down.

This particular episode of Marvel's What If...? was based on Marvel Zombies, a popular limited-run comic series set in an alternate Marvel universe. Plot details for the rest of the Disney+ series are firmly under lock and key, even for the season 1 episodes airing weekly through October. However, the developments in this episode should give fans hope that they may be seeing further exploration of wild Marvel alternate universe runs, like the "infinite New York" of Earth-212 or Neil Gaiman's Marvel 1602.
