When Sylvie killed He Who Remains in the season finale of Loki, the MCU’s multiverse was effectively unlocked and then further explored in What If…? The animated series brought back actors and characters from all over the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s history to share alternative stories.

It all culminated in Uatu the Watcher, voiced by Jeffrey Wright, forming the Guardians of the Multiverse to fight Infinity Ultron. While it is known that Hayley Atwell’s Captain Carter – who recently featured in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, although an alternate version – will get another episode, there are plenty of other heroes worthy of their own episode, too.

Rocket & Groot

Groot attacking someone in Guardians of the Galaxy

Recently, James Gunn revealed that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will be the last time fans will see the team – or at least as they are commonly recognized, per Deadline. Rightfully, that enigmatic and ominous statement has made many fans nervous since the characters have become very popular. Each guardian could do well with their own What If…? episode – like following up on Peter Quill in the T’Challa as Star-Lord Universe.

However, one of the most compelling and interesting stories could revolve around Rocket and Groot. The third Guardians of the Galaxy film might feature the former’s origins, and this episode could explore it in a different light, specifically framed as: what if Rocket and Groot never teamed up?

Black Widow (Yelena Belova)

Yelena Belova fighting in the Red Room

Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova quickly became a fan favorite following a scene-stealing performance in Black Widow, and it was only enhanced throughout Hawkeye with her and Kate Bishop’s strangely-electric relationship. Though Scarlett Johansson might be returning to the MCU according to recent rumors, Yelena has taken up the mantle of Black Widow, and thus an episode focusing on her would not come as a surprise.

This episode could actually feature both Yelena and Natasha, possibly exploring the fate of the world if the latter never turned against the KGB and became an Avenger. Such a story could then feature Yelena as the classically-heroic Black Widow fighting against her villainous sister – a twist on many of their comic stories.

Wong

Dr Strange in the Multiverse of Madness Benedict Wong as Wong

Spider-Man: No Way Home revealed that Wong is the MCU’s Sorcerer Supreme, replacing Doctor Strange following his apparent death during the Blip. Like Yelena, he is arguably one of the most popular characters currently in the MCU, and it seems fans we continue seeing Wong across the MCU, with an upcoming return already set in She-Hulk.

Following Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, many fans want to see a Wong-centric Disney+ series – possibly with him leading the magical academy at Kamar-Taj. Additionally, a What If…? episode would be exciting, and they could draw on proposed ideas from Michael Waldron, writer for the Doctor Strange sequel, who stated there is a Vegas magician version of Wong out there in the multiverse.

Nebula

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 Karen Gillan as Nebula

Ahead of Avengers: Endgame, some fans thought that the film could feature an aspect of the source material, The Infinity Gauntlet, in which Nebula takes control of the Infinity Gems. With the gauntlet, she gained omnipotence. It mentally breaks her, and she was only stopped by Adam Warlock. Of course, this did not happen in the MCU, and Nebula instead protected the gauntlet from her abusive father.

However, this would make a competent adaptation for a What If…? episode. Alternatively, it could feature a universe in which she was the favored daughter over Gamora, thus drastically changing their relationship and her motivations.

Valkyrie

When Thor: Ragnarok revitalized the hero, it also introduced one of the coolest adaptations to the MCU with Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie. She is currently serving as the King of New Asgard and will feature heavily in Thor: Love and Thunder facing off against Gorr the God Butcher. The recent trailer has made fans very excited to see her again, while also leaving them with important questions.

An episode focused on Valkyrie could showcase an alternate history for Asgard – perhaps as a world in which she beat Hela, or at least didn’t run into hiding. Interestingly such an episode could also incorporate other Asgardians, like Skurge and Angela, as the comic-accurate Asgardians of the Galaxy.

Shang-Chi

Shang Chi Father Fight Scene

So far, Phase Four has centered on introducing the next generation of heroes with Yelena Belova, Kate Bishop, and Shang-Chi in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. Based on the film’s post-credits stinger, both Shang-Chi and Awkafina’s Katy will be important characters in future team-ups.

Being such a new, yet popular character in the franchise would make him a worthy candidate for a What If…? episode. This would help audiences get to know him ahead of future films, and it could focus on what his life might’ve been like if he followed in his father’s footsteps. Viewers could see him as the next Mandarin, or in working with the Ten Rings organization as an assassin, connecting him with Iron Man, Killmonger, and others throughout MCU history.

Maria Rambeau

As expected, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is full of exciting and surprising cameos – though not as many as some fans wanted – including the return of Maria Rambeau as Earth-838’s Captain Marvel. While she and her fellow Illuminati colleagues did not survive their altercations with Scarlet Witch, this appearance would make for a great opportunity to see her origins in What If…?

Like Captain Carter’s episode, this would contextualize Carol Danvers’ story to Maria – which would be interesting since Captain Marvel actually drew from the origins of Maria’s daughter, Monica, as the second Captain Marvel. Showcasing Maria in an episode seems deserved for such a heroic character.

Hawkeye

Clint sitting in a cafe smiling in Hawkeye.

While Hawkeye introduced a new hero taking up the moniker in Kate Bishop, Clint Barton’s origins have still yet to be explored in the MCU. He is definitely one of the best heroes without powers and has an interesting backstory – coming up in the circus and being trained by Swordmaster, played by Tony Dalton in the Disney+ series.

An equally important aspect of his story is something many fans want to see explored – when he first met Black Widow. In What If…? fans could see a world drastically changed if he chose to take the shot and kill Natasha. While he wouldn’t know the ramifications of that decision, the episode could see him grapple with his life as a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent and hero.

Nick Fury

Nick Fury talking in Iron Man.

Ever since his introduction in the post-credits scene in Iron Man, Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury has been one of the most important and consistent characters in the MCU. He will finally headline his first project as the main protagonist in Secret Invasion, and given his vast history in the comics, he is definitely deserving of his own episode in What If…?

An interesting concept could be to explore his life if he had been indoctrinated into Hydra, and what might’ve happened differently during the events of Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Such an episode could then also draw from the comics line in which an alternate version of Steve Rogers is a Hydra sleeper agent, adapting this to Nick Fury.

Eternals

The Eternals standing together as a team on a beach.

Although Eternals is arguably one of the most polarizing entries in the MCU, the film directed by Academy-Award winner Chloe Zhao introduces important characters and elements to the franchise’s future. Plenty of characters could headline their own episode as part of What If…? such as Sersi, Ikaris, and Druig, but the best bet would be to focus on the entire team.

Specifically, it could answer the question posed by Kit Harrington’s Dane Whitman, “what if the Eternals intervened against Thanos?” Altogether, they are incredibly powerful, and it could incorporate them in the great battle in Wakanda in Avengers: Infinity War and a subsequent battle against the Avengers to fulfill their mission of protecting the Celestial set to hatch and destroy Earth.
