Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 will finally give players their first full look at Venom - and there are many ways Insomniac can portray this legendary character. Both Marvel’s Spider-Man and Spider-Man: Miles Morales hinted at the arrival of Spider-Man’s symbiote-empowered foe in their post-credit cutscenes, with the added twist that it might be Harry Osborn behind Venom’s inky black suit in this incarnation. Fans had since speculated that Venom’s arrival in the Insomniac Marvel gaming universe was imminent, and sure enough the monster made his presence felt during the Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 reveal trailer that was first shown at the PlayStation Showcase livestream last September.
There have been many versions of Venom in movies, cartoons, and even video games like 2008’s Spider-Man: Web of Shadows. The most widely known person to wear the Venom Symbiote is Eddie Brock, though there have been several others of varying moral character over the years. Brock has been the one who has varied the most since his introduction in the mid-80s though, going from a vengeful ex-reporter seeking to torment Spider-Man to a dark anti-hero who often teamed up with his former arch-nemesis to take down even more dangerous foes like Carnage. In modern times, Venom is shown to be a full-fledged hero, with Sony’s fledgling shared cinematic Marvel universe going as far as to feature him as its main hero so far.
Spider-Man 2’s Venom Could Share A Character Arc With Eddie Brock
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 may have a different person as Venom, but Harry Osborn could share some of the same character development beats that Eddie Brock followed in the comics. He could start the game fully under the sway of the Symbiote, wreaking havoc across Marvel’s Spider-Man 2’s open world and seeking revenge against Spider-Man. In many different Spider-Man media, Harry sees himself as trapped in Peter Parker’s shadow, and this resentment could fuel his rage as Venom. He could eventually regain control of himself and become an anti-hero, helping Peter and Miles with the game’s final villain before branching out on his own as a Lethal Protector. This could also allow Venom to be a playable character in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 like many have hoped for since his involvement in the game was first announced.
Of course, this is just one of the possible ways Venom’s story could end in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. Harry might prove to be beyond saving, with Peter and Miles forced to battle him as the game’s final boss. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is said to be darker than either of the Insomniac-developed Spider-Man games before it, and poor Harry’s already tragic storyline could end on a truly depressing note if Peter fails to get through to him.
Indeed, there are many ways that Insomniac could portray Venom in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 thanks to the various roles the iconic anti-hero has taken on the printed page and silver screen. Venom could easily be the main threat that Peter and Miles have to stop, or he might not even be a villain at all. Harry’s supposed role as Venom could also be a misdirection, with someone else taking on the mantle as the game progresses. Fans will get the answer to the question of Venom’s portrayal when Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 finally launches on the PlayStation 5 sometime next year.
