An eagle-eyed fan recently spotted a potential clue for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2's open-world New York hidden in the game's reveal trailer. This trailer was first seen during a massive PlayStation Showcase livestream last September and featured Peter Parker and Miles Morales teaming up to take down criminals as Venom lurked in the shadows. Several key tenets of the previous Insomniac-developed Marvel’s Spider-Man titles will remain in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, most important the open-world version of New York.

Fans have been speculating on ways that Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 can improve its open world, and now there’s a hint that players will have even more of New York to explore in the upcoming superhero sequel. Reddit user 1400Diggg recently spotted an interesting detail in the Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 reveal trailer, which they pointed out in a post on r/SpidemanPS4. Near the end of the trailer, Peter and Miles stop in front of a dark alleyway where Venom appears. Right before the symbiote does, some graffiti on one of the walls reads “718.” As 1400Diggg points out, this could be a reference to the 718 area code that is used for Brooklyn, Queens, and Staten Island - which in turn could mean that these three areas might be added to Marvel’s Spider-Man 2’s open-world version of Manhattan.

Both Queens and Brooklyn carry significance as these are the hometowns of Peter Parker and Miles Morales respectively. While the borough of Queens was explorable in the open-world Ultimate Spider-Man game, it was completely closed off in Marvel’s Spider-Man. Likewise, Brooklyn was off-limits in both Marvel’s Spider-Man and the 2020 spin-off Spider-Man: Miles Morales, though there were initially rumors that the Miles-centric title would take players there before it was revealed that it would be primarily set in Harlem, which already featured in the first Marvel's Spider-Man.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 has been said to be much bigger than the previous Insomniac Spider-Man offerings, with a much darker storyline to match the subject of Peter and Miles battling the monstrous Venom. While far from confirmation that the open world will expand in the sequel, it would make sense for Insomniac to expand the playable area. Manhattan is a tried and tested video game setting, and though the first two installments made it a compelling locale to explore, it wouldn't hurt for the sequel to include Brooklyn and Queens.

In addition to Marvel's Spider-Man 2 having a much darker story and increased action, it seems that players will have more of New York City to explore. While the graffiti spotted in last year’s Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 reveal trailer doesn't necessarily mean that the famed 718 area will be available to travel through, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 will likely feature more of New York as part of its apparent goal of building on what made the previous two games such a blockbuster success. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is set to launch on the PlayStation 5 in 2023, though an exact release date has yet to be confirmed.
