MODOK has sought many goals over the years, with most of them dealing with world domination in some form or another. However, the literally big-headed supervillain once pursued a rather unexpected desire - romance! In the 80's, MODOK briefly found love in the twisted form of Ms. MODOK.

Katherine Waynesboro was an undercover SHIELD agent sent to survey the then-pardoned Hulk, but soon wound up in the clutches of the Hulk's enemy, the Abomination, who brought her to AIM. The evil organization was eager to replace the original MODOK, who they deemed obsolete, so they preformed the same process they did on him on Kate, transforming her into the similarly misshapen Ms. MODOK. Unfortunately, AIM didn't learn from their mistakes as Ms. MODOK refused to comply with her objective to eliminate her predecessor. Instead, she fell in love with him.

MODOK and Ms. MODOK viewed one another as equals, since they not only had similar powers, but vast intellects as a result of their transformations. While this unexpected fling burned hot, it ultimately burned out. Eager for revenge upon AIM, MODOK brutally murdered the Abomination. With some part of Kate's moral compass still intact within Ms. MODOK, she turned on her lover as both MODOKs launched into a battle. Eventually, MODOK was able to force Ms. MODOK back into the conversation chamber which first initiated her transformation, and return her to normal.

Ms. MODOK and MODAM, the Two Female Versions of MODOK

Kate Waynesboro remained a fixture of the Incredible Hulk comics thereafter, even pursing a relationship with the intelligent version of the Hulk. However, her ties to SHIELD often conflicted with their relationship, and she was horrified by the Hulk's eventual descent into his traditionally savage persona. There were whispers she somehow reverted to Ms. MODOK, but these remain unsubstantiated (there was an unrelated female MODOK called MODAME). Interestingly enough, Kate herself gained superpowers from the dying Warbound Hiroim, and has since become a superhero in her own right.

The tale of Ms. MODOK is a defining one for both MODOK and Waynesboro herself, as it mixes cheesy sci-fi camp with something of a morality tale. MODOK briefly finds solace with female companionship, but his desire for an equal quickly turns awry after Ms. MODOK attacks him following the Abomination's murder. In fact, Ms. MODOK's eventual disgust mirrors the Bride of Frankenstein's reaction to the Monster in the classic film. With the original MODOK returned to normal and Kate Waynesboro moving on to bigger and better things, Ms. MODOK isn't referenced much - but with MODOK now taking the center stage in the latest Avengers game, is it only a matter of time before Ms. MODOK appears, in one form of media or another?
