The developer of Marvel's Midnight Suns has confirmed that players won't be able to date characters such as Iron Man or Captain America when the game releases next year. Marvel's Midnight Suns was announced during the recent Gamescom 2021 Opening Night Live showcase, and promises to deliver a darker take on the Marvel Universe.

Marvel's Midnight Suns was one of many surprise reveals shown during the Gamescom livestream event. The upcoming release is a tactical RPG starring some of Marvel's biggest names, including Iron Man, Wolverine, Captain America, Ghost Rider, and Blade. Developed by Firaxis, Marvel's Midnight Suns will see players befriend and live with some of Marvel's greatest characters as they face the demonic forces of the underworld. Fans will have a home base in which to settle down, The Abbey, where building friendships with the superheroes is possible. As a tactical RPG, players can expect the game to be very different to 2020's live-service title Marvel's Avengers.

In an interview with IGN, Marvel's Midnight Suns creative director Jake Solomon confirmed that friendship is as far as players can take their relationships at The Abbey, with no romance options available for any of the game's heroes. Solomon told the publication the decision to limit how far relationships can go is because the characters are "very well-defined," though players can expect their friendships to be "as deep as friendships go." The developer explained:

"The idea is that by the time you maximize your friendship with these characters, you are as close to them as anybody else in the Marvel universe. But yeah, not romantic. [T]rust me, if I could romance Blade, I would But yes, it's more a case of these are very well-defined characters. So instead it's deep, deep friendship."

Marvel's Midnight Suns Won't Let You Date Iron Man Or Captain America

Players might not be able to woo their favorite Marvel superhero in the game, but the friendship mechanic in Marvel's Midnight Suns is one fans won't want to ignore. Building relationships with the heroes at The Abbey will play a big role in the game, as it will offer the chance to unlock special powers and a unique costume. Additional attack power and abilities will be needed for the title's XCOM-like gameplay, so making friends with the game's many characters seems like a worthwhile endeavor in order to make the most of what each hero has to offer.

Marvel's Midnight Suns is aiming to provide a different kind of Marvel experience, using Firaxis' XCOM formula with a superhero twist. The game already stands out from other recent Marvel video game releases not just due to its blend of RPG and tactical gameplay, but also with its protagonist. The title will feature the first original and customizable hero in the Marvel Universe, simply referred to as the Hunter.
