Marvel's Midnight Suns contains a lot of interpersonal drama between some of Marvel's finest, a formula that is much better-suited for another iconic superhero team. The card-based tactical RPG features a riveting campaign narrative, as well as an eclectic cast of characters teaming up to defeat Lilith and her legion of demons. This includes members of the Avengers, Runaways, and X-Men, to name a few, joining the team known as the Midnight Suns. Based on these characters' interactions, however, it might have made more sense if they were hosted by an alternative Marvel team.

While one of the novelties of blockbuster Marvel video games is getting to experience the thrills of assembling a personalized superhero team, Marvel's Midnight Suns' character roster doesn't make sense. Characters like Iron Man, Captain America, and Captain Marvel seem like out-of-place character choices, balking the addition of more supernatural heroes in favor of the MCU stars. Plus, the social interactions with those characters feel like they've been shoehorned in, while characters like Magik and Ghost Rider feel right at home in the Abbey. If those characters were substituted for other Marvel heroes, the game's social interactions could have felt more organic.

The X-Men Would Have Been Better Suited For Marvel's Midnight Suns

The X-Men would have been a perfectly-tailored pairing to Marvel's Midnight Suns' social environment. The X-Men comics were known for their soapy, character-driven drama, and would have matched the tone of Marvel's Midnight Suns perfectly. Not only that, but The Abbey is essentially the X-Mansion, hosting the wayward teams as they band together for pending battles and build important friendships. The X-Men could have dramatically changed the social dynamics of Marvel's Midnight Suns, and possibly lead to a full X-Men game in the future, but the game instead favored popular Avengers and only two X-Men, Magik and Wolverine.

Marvel's Midnight Suns Dialogue Fleshes Out Character Backstories

Despite the missing X-Men from Marvel's Midnight Suns, the dialogue between its characters is nonetheless engaging and enjoyable. Firaxis Games put time and effort into giving each character unique dialogues and conversational options that breathe life into each member of the Avengers, Runaways, and X-Men hanging around. Forging close bonds with these characters throughout the Abbey to gain loyalties and better cards, while exploring each of their dynamic backstories, is a fantastic incentive to chat with the myriad heroes littering its campus.

The game is still growing, with Marvel's Midnight Suns' ending setting up DLC to introduce four new characters, including another X-Man, Storm. It is even possible that more X-Men could join Marvel's Midnight Suns' character roster throughout the life of the game. As the game continues to grow in its gameplay and popularity, it seems more likely that the dramatic, soapy energy of the X-Men could come to Marvel's Midnight Suns, one character at a time.
