Despite the diverse roster Marvel's Midnight Suns boasts, some characters are overpowered compared to others. The 2K and Firaxis game sees some members of the popular Avengers, X-Men, and Midnight Suns teams come together to fight the demon Lilith. In a break from the usual Firaxis style, combat consists of three heroes on a mission using card-based abilities. This, along with careful use of the missions' environment, leads to more carefully executed plans and harsher consequences for failure.

Midnight Suns currently has 13 playable characters, with four more coming later in DLC, a roster mash-up that has drawn comparisons between Midnight Suns and Marvel Strike Force. The Avengers roster brings Iron Man, Captain Marvel, Dr. Strange, Captain America, and Hulk. The titular Midnight Suns contribute Blade, Magik, Nico Minoru, Robbie Reyes' Ghost Rider, and Scarlet Witch. Two of the last three spots include Wolverine and Spider-Man from their respective groups, with more characters from their background coming later. The final spot is reserved for the player character The Hunter, famed child of Lilith and the first ever creatable Marvel hero.

Marvel's Midnight Suns' Most Overpowered Characters

A line-up of 10 Marvel's Midnight Suns characters, including the brand new Hunter, Wolverine, Iron Man, and Captain America.

Although every character is strong in their own right and undoubtedly usable at any point in the game, others make even the most challenging missions feel manageable, even if Midnight Sun's roster doesn't make sense to some. Ghost Rider is one of the highest damaging characters while also being able to sustain damage if used correctly. Captain Marvel is similar in this way but with much more survivability and less ability to move the enemy around. Magik is another great damage character with the highest ceiling for enemy movement in the game. Captain America is the best tank in the game and can dish out good damage, while Dr. Strange is the best support while also being able to deal serious damage in a pinch.

Marvel's Midnight Suns' Top Five Characters

Ghost Rider in Marvel's Midnight Suns holding a flaming chain with a hook, while Iron Man fires a repulsor in the background.

Ghost Rider does a little bit of everything, having high damage with many abilities that will move enemies around the map. He also gets the bonus where if players use his passive Soul Collector correctly, it will grant him permanent health that, while not making him a tank, allows for his self-damaging abilities to be used often. Ghost Rider also has a handy self-healing ability that is great at taking out multiple weaker enemies. Captain Marvel is similar to Ghost Rider with her high damage output but is a much better tank due to her Midnight Suns Binary mechanic that activates after playing three cards. Binary gives her a high Block shield and increases the damage to her abilities. Magik is more fragile than the previous two but still makes her mark offensively. Her portals are great ways to launch enemies into the environment, stunning or exploding them, while her offensive abilities deal high damage and offer crowd control.

Since Hulk is a late-game addition, Captain America makes for the best tank over the campaign's length, with the ability to Taunt enemies and give him and his teammates extra Block. The first Avenger also has a few mighty attacks, good for dispatching multiple foes or focusing on one. Dr. Strange, an underused Marvel game character, easily claims the best support title as his abilities will buff team damage and give the team more card uses. His attacks can also deal great damage but rely on how much Heroism a player has built up, so they are best used at the perfect time.

Firaxis has done an incredible job of ensuring every hero feels unique and viable. However, not every hero is created equally; some are just that much better than others. It will be interesting to see how Midnight Sun's DLC character additions, Deadpool, Storm, Morbius, and Venom, fit into this structure once they are added down the line. Either way, Marvel's Midnight Suns has given fans another great Marvel game filled with heroes that feel like such, while delivering on parts of the franchise that don't see as much limelight.
