Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy is an upcoming single-player action-adventure game from Square Enix and Eidos-Montreal, featuring a new story around the beloved, rag-tag space heroes. Though the trailer and other promotional material showcase Guardians such as Gamora, Groot, Drax, and Rocket, players are placed in the role of Star-Lord. As appealing as being the leader of the gang in Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy is to many, it may seem odd that Star-Lord is the only playable character, but developers have assured fans the decision was made purposefully.

Square Enix and Eidos-Montreal haven't revealed too much about Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy's story, save that the characters will have different backgrounds and attributes than their MCU and comic counterparts. All that's known is that the Guardians are the catalyst for a series of catastrophes that requires them to travel the universe and encounter villains like Lady Hellbender and the Universal Church of Truth.

In an interview with VG247, Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy senior creative director Jean-François Dugas elaborated on the reasoning behind Star-Lord being the only playable Guardian. According to Dugas, the team "wanted players to be at the center stage of [the Guardians'] dynamic" allowing them to fully step into the leadership role for the group. As Star-Lord, Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy players can react to the other Guardians' actions and suggestions, shaping the texture and tone of the game.

Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy: What to Expect as Star-Lord

In the trailers and gameplay reveals for Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy, players get a hint at the kind of decisions they will have to make as Star-Lord. They can cast deciding votes among the group, such as whether to sell Groot or Rocket to Lady Hellbender, choose how to infiltrate an impregnable fortress, and strategize how to use each of the Guardians' skills in combat. Though Dugas assures players their decisions won't change the larger adventure, they will change the course of how every interaction will play out. For example, one scene shows Drax attempting to throw Rocket across a chasm against his will, and players must choose to encourage or stop him. Whatever the decision is, it will likely affect how the Guardian's perceive and respond to Star-Lord moving forward.

Star-Lord's combat skills in Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy feature all the exciting moves franchise fans should expect. Star-Lord's jetpack and boots make for versatile yet powerful hits in hand-to-hand combat, and like in the films, music in the Guardians of the Galaxy game will play a large role, since players will be able to set an '80s soundtrack for fight scenes. Star-Lord can call out the other Guardians' abilities as needed based on the strategy the player wants to take. In the trailers, Rocket is shown blowing things up, Drax is punching things, Gamora is using precision fighting, and Groot is menacingly growing roots to attack foes. With players calling the shots, Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy is set to be a dynamic gameplay experience even if fans can only play as Star-Lord.
