Captain Marvel 2 is now officially titled The Marvels, but the implication behind that title could indicate a coming conflict between Carol Danvers and Monica Rambeau. 2020 was a lost year for Marvel Studios, with the raging Coronavirus pandemic preventing the release of any planned MCU movies or Disney+ TV shows. Thankfully for fans, 2021 has seen the MCU beast awaken, first with WandaVision, then with The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, and in June, with Loki too. In July, Black Widow kicks off a parade of four new MCU movies set to come in 2021.

There are also currently four MCU movies set for 2022 as well, with the final of those being Captain Marvel 2, which catches up with Carol Danvers after her last appearance during Avengers: Endgame. However, it's now confirmed this won't be a solo affair, as The Marvels logo makes it clear that three female heroes are set to share the spotlight in this sequel. There's Carol (Brie Larson) of course, but also Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel (Iman Vellani), and a newly superpowered Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris) after she emerged from WandaVision with new abilities.

In the comics, Monica's superhero identity is Spectrum, but she also took over the Captain Marvel moniker, and The Marvels title hints at more than her sharing just screentime with "Auntie Carol." Instead, there's a chance Monica might be wanting to supplant her mother's former best friend.

The Marvels Could Put Carol Danvers & Monica Rambeau On A Collision Course

Carol Danvers in Captain Marvel and Monica Rambeau in WandaVision

Taken at its most literal, the new title and logo for the Captain Marvel sequel, The Marvels, implies the participation of several superheroes with the word Marvel in their name. Carol Danvers is Captain Marvel, so there's one, and Kamala Khan's Ms. Marvel is the second. However, Monica Rambeau's current superhero identity in Marvel Comics is Spectrum, breaking that pattern. That's until one considers that Monica once held the title of Captain Marvel in the comics world. The MCU can't have two Captain Marvels at once, or rather it theoretically could, but it's hard to imagine Carol wanting to share the identity she created.

Carol may well not have a choice in the matter though, as WandaVision not so subtly confirmed that Monica harbors some pronounced ill-will toward her former surrogate family member. It wasn't made explicit why that is, but the logical conclusion would be that Monica has a grudge against Carol for leaving to help the Skrulls in the early 1990s, then never coming back to Earth for the nearly three decades between the first Captain Marvel movie and Avengers: Endgame. No impression is given that she ever stopped to say hi to Maria or Monica either before or after Endgame, or even visited Maria as she was battling and ultimately dying from cancer. If that's the case, it's not hard to see why Monica would be angry, and perhaps not see Carol as worthy of being Captain Marvel anymore. With that in mind, The Marvels might be less a team-up film and more a confrontation between former friends.
