You don't have to look hard to find giant universe-spanning Marvel crossovers. The various Avengers titles alone bring together heroes from all over the galaxy on a regular basis. However, writer Kurt Busiek and artist Yildiray Cinar are collaborating on a new series that promises to go beyond what readers have seen before. The Marvels is a new series and a spiritual follow-up of sorts to Marvels (a limited series first published in 1994) and it's spin-offs and sequels such as Marvels X and Marvels: Epilogue. Heroes will come together in a sprawling adventure that will hit every corner of the Marvel Universe both big and small.

This ambitious project was first conceived of when Busiek was working on Avengers in the late 90s. It wasn't until it came time for the 25th-anniversary of Marvels that Busiek started circling back around to the idea. The title promises to show sides of the Marvel Universe from "The street-level to the cosmic." And indeed, some of the ideas that Busiek has kicked around truly seem to live up to that pitch. With stories involving heroes from the 70s involved in an arc that spans decades, to what somebody like M.O.D.O.K. does on his night off from being evil.

The series also will also see the return of several old and obscure characters who'll join the more modern popular heroes. Characters like, Aarkus, who is the Golden Age version of Vision. So if you're a fan of some of the less celebrated heroes from yesteryear, then you've got a lot to look forward to with this series. The first story arc will drop readers off in a post-WWII Southeast Asia and will also involve the 70s versions of Thor and Iron Man. With all this time jumping and older versions of heroes, it has yet to be revealed how these events will affect the greater Earth-616 continuity.

While the story gives fans a lot to look forward to, Busiek was quick to point out that the art will be amazing as well. Busiek had a lot of praise for his collaborator Cinar, who got his start at Image Comics and made a name for himself working on DC titles like Teen Titans and Legion of Super-Heroes. Along with Cinar, Alex Ross will be bringing his stunning artwork to the covers of each issue, as well as having a hand in designing the new characters The Marvels will introduce over time. All of this news means we can't wait to pick up the first issue when it debuts in May of 2020!
