Square Enix has revealed that the free War for Wakanda expansion for Marvel's Avengers will launch on all platforms on August 17. War for Wakanda will add new single-player and multiplayer content to the game, bringing Marvel's Avengers' story content to over 25 hours in length.

The planned free updates for Marvel's Avenger have slowly been released since the game launched in 2020. These free content updates added Kate Bishop and Hawkeye to the game, but the new story content was minimal. The most recent addition to the game was the Omega Level Threat: Family Reunion challenge, which offered new endgame content for high-level players.

War for Wakanda will feature a unique version of Black Panther that is different from what fans of the comics and the MCU might expect. The story of the expansion involves Klaw's invasion of Wakanda. The new version of Black Panther is wary of trusting people, following past betrayals. He has also been described as arrogant and aloof. It's up to the Avengers to take the battle to Klaw, in order to protect Wakanda from his forces.

The people who have yet to try the game out can do so soon, as Marvel's Avengers is having a free weekend that runs from July 29-August 1. This free weekend is available on all platforms, except for Xbox systems, which will have a similar free event in the future. The free weekend will also have a number of special promotions, as well as a 40% discount for Marvel's Avengers on all platforms. War for Wakanda is the biggest update to Marvel's Avengers yet, especially as it's bringing fan-favorite Black Panther to the game. It remains to be seen whether War for Wakanda will reverse the game's fortunes, but a change of pace is exactly what Marvel's Avengers needs to win back the fans.
