Players have been waiting for MCU skins to arrive in Marvel’s Avengers for a while. Now that they're finally coming, the excitement is being overshadowed by controversy as the skins are only available on the Marketplace. The lackluster launch to Marvel’s Avengers gave rise to many controversies revolving around the game, but one thing fans have always been excited about was the promise of DLC content that the developers claimed would be free, post-launch. While the lack of immediate updates was explained by Crystal Dynamics, due to the team focusing on patches and bug fixes, players have still patiently awaited additions to the superhero game. One of the most anticipated additions was the arrival of MCU skins, and now their arrival is imminent, but it comes with a catch.

There is plenty of content that Marvel’s Avengers players want to see, including many updates which were promised by the game’s developers or outlined in post-launch content maps. The list of those anticipated DLC drops has players excited at the prospect of an improved Marvel’s Avengers, especially after the critical failure it was at launch. While MCU skins won't improve the experience from a gameplay perspective, they would still serve as a fun treat for fans. Unfortunately, now that they're on the horizon, there's a pretty major catch.

In a tweet by Marvel’s Avengers, the new Red Room Takeover event was announced, bringing with it new content such as animated nameplates, outfits inspired by the MCU, and a HARM Room hacked by Yelena Belova. The announcement was quickly overshadowed by a second tweet, clarifying that the MCU skins will only be available in the Marketplace, purchasable with credits. The clarification sparked a wave of angry comments and retweets, and plenty of fans argued that the promise of free DLC was tainted by the new addition.

While there are ways to earn credits in Marvel’s Avengers without paying for them, many fans insist that this is still just a cheap scheme utilizing microtransactions to suck more money out of players. Plenty of harsh comments insisted that the update is heartless, and takes away the excitement of the long-awaited addition of the MCU skins.

Still, plenty of fans came to Marvel’s Avengers defense, contending that microtransactions of this scale are virtually harmless, and that if the skins are bundled at a decent price, no one should be angry. Fans went on to say that microtransactions are a legitimate way for games to maintain funding after launch, allowing new content to be added and fixes to be implemented. One fan even went as far as to say, “If you don’t like it. Then don’t play it. Simple as that.”

There is plenty of free content coming to Marvel’s Avengers, in a hopefully long road of improvements. Many fans of the controversial title have had their excitement for this new content tainted by the paywall that has been set up around these MCU outfits. There is no confirmation of the price of the skins, but as of now, many players believe any price is too high.
