Marvel’s Avengers is getting yet another alternate character skin based on the MCU films, namely Iron Man’s Mark XLVI armor from Captain America: Civil War. Developer Crystal Dynamics has continued to add new content to Marvel’s Avengers in the years since it first launched, ranging from playable missions to new heroes like Black Panther, Kate Bishop, and the upcoming Marvel’s Avengers version of Jane Foster’s Mighty Thor. There have also been several DLC costumes for the currently existing heroes, such as the dreaded Monster Hulk from the 2011 Incredible Hulks comic run.
Naturally, some of these new Marvel’s Avengers skins have been drawn from the silver screen, with Thor recently getting his eyepatch look from Avengers: Infinity War and Captain America sporting his World War II battle attire from Captain America: The First Avenger. Just last month, Iron Man received his classic Mark III suit from the very first Iron Man movie, and recent rumors have suggested that his more bleeding edge armor from 2016’s Captain America: Civil War would be added to Marvel’s Avengers alongside the previously mentioned Monster Hulk and Ms. Marvel’s Kree Stormranger suit from the cover of Magnificent Ms. Marvel #5.
Earlier today, the official Marvel’s Avengers Twitter account verified this leak by announcing that Iron Man's Captain America: Civil War Outfit will be available to purchase in the Marketplace starting tomorrow. Based on 2006’s infamous Civil War storyline, Captain America: Civil War sees the Avengers divided over government regulation of superheroes, as well as Steve Rogers’ continued loyalty to his friend Bucky Barnes - who recently re-emerged as the brainwashed assassin the Winter Solider. Tony Stark dons his new, highly advanced red-and-gold Mark XLVI armor to lead his team of still-loyal Avengers into battle against Captain America and his allies at a German airport, then challenges Cap and Bucky in a secret Hydra bunker during the film’s emotional climax.
For the moment, it seems that Crystal Dynamics will continue supporting Marvel’s Avengers with new playable heroes and alternate skins, but the long-troubled superhero title’s future was recently brought into question after publisher Square Enix sold the former Tomb Raider studio to Embracer Group earlier this month. Even before this, Crystal Dynamics developers denied that they had any long-term roadmap for new Marvel’s Avengers DLC content, instead choosing to focus on short-term updates that could very well be halted if Disney chooses not to approve them in the wake of the recent Embracer buyout and Marvel’s Avengers' own struggling sales.
Still, Captain America: Civil War is regarded by many as one of the MCU’s best films, and Iron Man’s visually impressive Mark XLVI armor is one of its most memorable elements - especially as it was used to usher in MCU characters like Spider-Man and Black Panther. The look of this powered-up battle suit is captured quite well in Marvel’s Avengers, and players will be able to strap on this iconic outfit to battle heroes and villains alike when it is added to the online Marketplace starting tomorrow.
