According to an unofficial leak on Reddit, Spider-Man might be swinging into Marvel’s Avengers, after all - at least on PlayStation consoles. The friendly-neighborhood web-slinger has already been alluded to in Square Enix's upcoming superhero title, but there hasn't been any official confirmation that he will be teaming up with Iron Man and company in the new game.

So far, Marvel’s Avengers has promised a multitude of Earth’s Mightiest heroes joining forces after a tragedy forces the team apart, with popular figures like Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel and the long-requested Hawkeye being among the list of confirmed playable characters. Now, there is word that those who buy the PS4 version of Marvel’s Avengers might be able to take on M.O.D.O.K and the forces of A.I.M as the one and only Peter Parker himself.

Redditor FNaF_walrusman posted a news tip to the r/GamingLeaksAndRumors subreddit yesterday, hinting that Spider-Man might be a PS4 exclusive playable character in Marvel’s Avengers. The online shopping website Base.com featured a text excerpt to this effect on their Marvel’s Avengers page, although it has since been removed. So far, there is no word on if this is legitimate (and the release date listed on Base’s page is inaccurate). If it is real, then it's unclear if Spidey’s PS4 exclusivity is permanent.

Spider-Man has always been successful in the world of video games, but the trusty Wall-Crawler has enjoyed a new wave of success in recent years thanks to Insomniac’s critically acclaimed Marvel’s Spider-Man for the PS4, which is currently the most financially successful superhero title in the US. In addition to a planned sequel (which is rumored to include a cameo from a high-ranking Avenger), there will also be a spin-off game for the PS5 titled Spider-Man: Miles Morales, which will continue the titular Brooklyn teen’s journey in taking up the mantle of the famed hero.

While Marvel fans who only own an Xbox console will likely scoff at the idea of a major character like Spider-Man being exclusive to the PlayStation version of Marvel’s Avengers. However, it does kind of make sense given how the Webhead's last video game outing was PS4-only, as well as his movie rights being partially owned by Sony's film division. Some commenters in the Reddit post have speculated that Spidey will only be console-exclusive for a limited time, only to be made more widely available later on. Of course, this is only if the rumors of Spider-Man's inclusion in Marvel’s Avengers are true at all, as so far this is all just speculation. Regardless, fans will be able to assemble the rest of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes on September 4.
