The roster of playable characters in Marvel's Avengers has grown considerably since launch, but the game's selection of flying heroes is still lacking, and really needs to be expanded. While the recent addition of the game's latest hero in Marvel's Avengers, Spider-Man was well-received, it continued a negative trend of not adding new flying heroes in Marvel's Avengers ever-expanding roster. This is despite the fact that Marvel's Avengers created an entire flying mechanic, complete with unique flying controls, only to rarely ever use it. Sadly, if the leaks and datamines are to be believed, this trend won't be changing anytime soon, with only one of the three rumored characters (She-Hulk, Winter Soldier, and Captain Marvel) having the ability to fly. Considering that adding more flying characters is one of Marvel's Avengers players' most requested features, Crystal Dynamics should take this into account and plan some more flying heroes.

When Marvel's Avengers first released, it featured two flying heroes (those being Marvel's Avengers' Iron Man and Thor). Considering that the game launched with six playable heroes, having 1/3 of the roster having the ability to fly was not a bad ratio. However, the game has since expanded its roster to feature 10 playable heroes (including the PlayStation exclusive Spider-Man), and none of the new heroes have been given the ability to fly. This now leaves only 1/5 of the roster with access to the flying mechanic, pigeonholing a robust and interesting mechanic into a small minority of heroes' kits. This is frustrating for many players, considering the unique mechanics and abilities that being able to fly brings to the game.

The importance of being able to fly in Marvel's Avengers has increased significantly in the past few major updates. Marvel's Avengers' Klaw Raid includes sections that contain puzzles and battles that are very difficult to complete without at least one hero that can fly on the team. For instance, the Forge section requires that players are able to quickly scale a massive machine, alternating between hitting the right symbol on the top and destroying the corrupted Vibranium on the pistons on the side. The jumping platforms regularly disappear, making this very difficult to do without a flying hero. In addition, the recent Shipments system requires that players spend a lot of time farming strongboxes, something that is far easier when playing as a flying hero.

Flying Characters That Could Join The Marvel's Avengers Roster

A recent leak from Miller, one of the game's most reliable sources for leaks, indicated that an echo character (a term used for a character that is similar in gameplay and powers to an already playable character) like Yelena Belova or Shuri could join Marvel's Avengers prior to the release of its next full hero. This could be an excellent chance to introduce another playable character that can fly. Some players have theorized that the hero could be Jane Foster's Thor (echoing Thor's abilities) or Iron Man's protege, Iron Heart (echoing Iron Man's abilities). Either of these characters would make for a great addition to Marvel's Avengers' roster, giving players more options while still giving them the ability to fly. This would also help to make the two existing flyers less of a necessity in high-level play and help to diversify the characters that appear in matchmaking.

In general, Crystal Dynamics needs to do a better job of diversifying the game's roster. Marvel's Avengers needs more female characters and characters with more unique powers. Because of this, Scarlet Witch and Captain Marvel would be perfect additions to the game's roster. Scarlet Witch can bring unique abilities through her use of Chaos Magic, while Captain Marvel could bring her diverse and powerful range of abilities, including photon blasts and binary form to Marvel's Avengers. Both heroes would add another flyer to Marvel's Avengers, something the game really needs.
