The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel star Alex Borstein discusses whether her character, Susie Myerson, could be getting a spinoff. In the flash-forward setup of Marvelous Mrs. Maisel season 5, it's revealed that Susie and Midge (Rachel Brosnahan) become estranged at some point in the future. It's a big development for the show's final season, as the two characters had been the closest of friends. From a narrative perspective, it hints at how Susie's story could continue in her very own show.

In an interview with The Wrap, Borstein addresses whether a Susie spinoff could happen once The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel season 5 concludes the show. In her response, included below, Borstein says that the chances of a spinoff come down to the story that Mrs. Maisel creator Amy Sherman-Palladino wants to tell. Borstein adds that, from her perspective, she would like to continue portraying Susie, explaining:

Whatever [‘Mrs. Maisel’ creator] Amy Sherman-Palladino wants to do — and if I am invited to the party — I am there. I’m there early, and I will be the last guest to leave. I really, I just feel very safe and I really trust her. She creates these universes that consistently expand, and I don’t know how she does it. You cannot get bored because it’s constantly expanding and changing and, and like the universe, there’s enough dark matter to keep you surprised and wondering and explore and yeah. If Amy Sherman-Palladino were to say, ‘let’s explore Susie more,’ I would absolutely trust her that there’s something worth telling.

Could A Mrs. Maisel Spinoff Happen?

The team behind The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel has been asked whether Midge's story could continue after season 5 in some form, with a reboot or a spinoff, and if it might actually carry on beyond its five-season plan. Sherman-Palladino has generally struck a balanced tone, saying that she appreciates the idea of a continuation because of how much she'd like to keep contact with the cast and crew. Ultimately, however, Sherman-Palladino stresses the importance of not overstaying a welcome, and that it's too early to think about a follow-up.

Depending on where Marvelous Mrs. Maisel's season 5 cast ends up, with two episodes remaining at the time of this writing, a spinoff centered around Susie could work. That's especially true if it focuses just on Susie, in her time of estrangement from Midge, with occasional guest appearances from Brosnahan and others. Borstein is a three-time Emmy winner, with her portrayal of Susie becoming a favorite among viewers. There's both the story potential and the talent to help launch the project if it happens.

For the moment, Sherman-Palladino has another show announced for Prime Video. Along with spouse and collaborator Daniel Palladino, the duo has received a two-season order for Étoile. The series, which is set to star The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel alum Luke Kirby, centers around the dancers and artistic staff of two world-renowned ballet companies. However, perhaps there could be room for a Susie spinoff down the line.
