In The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel season 2 trailer, the comedy series announces a December premiere date and appears to be more extravagant and ambitious. Earlier this year, Amazon’s original series won eight Emmy Awards, guided by Rachel Brosnahan’s critically acclaimed performance and Amy Sherman-Palladino’s creative vision.

Most TV fans know Sherman-Palladino as the creator of Gilmore Girls, the iconic 21st century family drama featuring sharp, pop culture-infused dialogue. For The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’s first season, Sherman-Palladino applied similar comedic concepts, with rising star Brosnahan in the titular role as a Jewish Manhattan housewife-turned-stand up comedian. Given the 1958 setting, the series has the same vintage look as AMC’s Mad Men, but with a little more snark and narrative wit, along with a touch of Broadway theatrics. As Miriam “Midge” Maisel, Brosnahan attempts to find her true calling after a failed marriage, resulting in a comedic exploration of gender, race, and class dynamics, punctuated by lively dialogue and colorful visuals. Previously known for her lead role on WGN’s Manhattan, Brosnahan became a streaming era star after winning both a Golden Globe and Emmy Award for her season 1 performance.

Today, Amazon released The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’s season 2 trailer, which announces the show will return on Dec. 5. To begin, Midge reflects on her journey, referencing the significant life change she experienced one year prior. Accompanied by a perky show tune score, the clip wastes little time by referencing the series’ season 1 accolades via pink and white graphics, before exploring the title character’s personal and professional relationships.

Visually, the trailer accentuates the atmosphere of late 50s New York City, along with the series’ astonishing production design. As for the season 2 narrative, Midge hopes to keep progressing forward with her comedy career, nervous about keeping the secret from her entire family, all the while feeling energized by the stories she’s able to tell as a single woman. Rather than feeling intimidated by the “cheap beer and piss” culture, Midge embraces the struggle.

While Brosnahan is obviously the primary selling point in the new trailer, it’s the supporting cast that makes the clip tick, and all the regulars from season 1 are back, including Alex Borstein (Family Guy), Michael Zegen (Boardwalk Empire), and Luke Kirby (The Deuce) as the iconic comedian Lenny Bruce. Last May, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel was renewed by Amazon, and Shazam! star Zachary Levi was officially announced as a new cast member two days later.

By this point, most viewers know what to expect, aesthetically, from Amazon’s clever comedy. Now, let’s see how far Amy Sherman-Palladino and Rachel Brosnahan are willing to go with the endearing yet feisty Midge.
