Warning: SPOILERS for The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Season 4

Now that The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel season 4 has begun, are Joel (Michael Zegen) and Midge Maisel (Rachel Brosnahan) still married? The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel season 4 picks up right after season 3's cliffhanger when Midge and her manager, Susie Myerson (Alex Borstein), are fired from Shy Baldwin's (LeRoy McClain) tour. Stuck in New York City, Midge has to face the humiliation of telling her family that she was kicked off the tour. Meanwhile, Joel gets in trouble when he learns his Chinatown nightclub has grown too successful for his Chinese landlords, who are running a gambling den in the basement.

Joel and Midge's relationship remains integral to The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. Midge never would have become a stand-up comic had Joel not left her at the start of Mrs. Maisel season 1. It was Joel's dream to be a comedian but it was Midge who had the natural talent to get on the mic in front of a crowd of strangers and fire zingers off the top of her head. The dissolution of Joel and Midge's marriage was juxtaposed with flashbacks throughout The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel that showed how they met in college and how Joel proposed to Midge in the early 1950s. Both Joel and Midge have moved on from each other - or tried to, in any case. Midge was briefly engaged to Dr. Benjamin Ettenberg (Zachary Levi), whom she left high and dry to go on tour with Shy Baldwin. Meanwhile, Joel found a new girlfriend in Mei Lin (Stephanie Hsu), the mysterious liaison between Maisel and his landlords. And yet, try as they might to break away from each other, Midge and Joel keep coming back together in spite of themselves.

Amazingly, Midge and Joel are still married when The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel season 4 begins, but it's their second marriage and it's a secret they're keeping from nearly everyone. After Joel left Midge, it took almost the entire length of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel season 1 before they agreed to divorce. The Maisels entered divorce proceedings in season 2 but the divorce wasn't finalized until Mrs. Maisel season 3, episode 3, "Panty Pose." But in the very next episode, "Hands!", Joel flies to Las Vegas to see Midge perform. After a drunken night out, Joel and Midge awaken to find they got married again. The Maisels quickly agree to divorce, and Joel tells Midge he's "kinda seeing someone," but as of the start of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel season 4, they are still legally married for the second time.

Mrs Maisel Midge Joel Divorce

Neither Joel nor Midge are taking their second marriage seriously and that continues in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel season 4. Joel continues to date Mei and he has realized it's time to tell his parents, Moishe (Kevin Pollack) and Shirley (Caroline Aaron), about his Chinese girlfriend. Although Joel still lives in his converted office at Maisel & Roth, Moishe's garment factory, his father hasn't run across Mei when she stays over. Meanwhile, Midge isn't interested in being in a relationship because she wants to wholeheartedly pursue her comedy career and she believes she's destined to be alone because of it.

Ironically, Shy Baldwin knows Midge remarried Joel because she told him when they were sailing a boat together in Miami. Midge also inadvertently told the audience at Joel's nightclub when she did an impromptu set on-stage and called Joel "my again soon-to-be ex-husband." Mei was also there and she claims she knew Joel was married but it's not clear if Joel's girlfriend heard what Midge said on stage and if she pieced together that Joel and Midge are actually still married. If Mei did, it hasn't affected her relationship with Joel. Time will tell if Joel and Midge will divorce again will end in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel season 4.
