A new trailer for What If...? shows Captain Carter fighting a massive monster with a sword. After Sylvie (Sophia Di Martino) seemingly created Marvel's multiverse by killing He Who Remains (Jonathan Majors) in the season 1 finale of Loki, What If...? will be the next Marvel series to explore the possibility of multiple timelines in the MCU. Premiering August 11 on Disney+, What If...? will also be Marvel Studios’ first foray into animation.

Based on the comics' storyline of the same name, What If...? will revisit pivotal moments from the MCU's timeline and imagine if things played out a bit differently. The animated series will be narrated by Uatu the Watcher (Jeffrey Wright) whose role has been compared to Rod Serling's from The Twilight Zone. Plenty of storylines have been confirmed, but a few of the most notable are Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell) becoming a super soldier and T'Challa becoming Star-Lord, which was Chadwick Boseman’s final role before his untimely death last year.

A trailer for What If...? came earlier this month and now Marvel has released another 30-second teaser showcasing the show's various alternate scenarios. It was known that one of these scenarios includes Peggy Carter takes the super-soldier serum instead of Steve Rogers, but now the recent trailer shows Captain Carter battling a massive monster with a sword. While many were expecting What If...? to be an aside from the core MCU timeline, this is looking less and less likely to be the case. With so many multiverse-centric storylines on the way, the series could be laying the foundation for the rest of Phase 4. Fans with a keen eye will notice that Captain Carter appears to be wielding the Sword of Might and the massive monster she is fighting appears to be Shuma-Gorath, which actually is not the first time the tentacular villain was seen in a trailer for What If...?.

It has been rumored that Shuma-Gorath will appear in 2022’s Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness as one of the villains. If that is the case, it would make sense for Marvel to introduce them on the small screen first, such as they did with Jonathan Majors’ Kang variant in Loki, who will appear again no later than 2023’s Ant-Man 3. It won’t be long though until Captain Cater takes on Shuma-Gorath, as episode 1 of What if..? will reportedly focus on Peggy’s alternative journey.
