The Spider-Man collectible figure from the What if…? merchandise line was confirmed as a zombie hunter version of the popular MCU character. What if...? is an upcoming animated television series that will explore alternative character stories and events if defining moments in the MCU happened differently. The first season of the Marvel series will consist of ten episodes, which will launch on streaming service Disney+ on August 11.

The show has a huge ensemble cast, bringing back many of the actors from previous MCU films to voice their animated counterparts, except for Tony Stark/Iron Man, Steve Rogers/Captain America, Doctor Stephen Strange, Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel, and a few more who will be voiced by different actors. The exploration of the multiverse, central to the plot, will be led by Jeffrey Wright as Uatu/The Watcher, a member of an extraterrestrial species who monitors alternative timelines. Recent footage has shown that Marvel Zombies will be explored in these alternate realities, and from the merch, it’s now known which superheroes are set to battle against them.

The “Build A Figure” merchandise for Marvel's What if…? series was revealed on Hasbro Pulse’s YouTube channel. As noted, Spider-Man’s character has been confirmed as a zombie hunter, hinting that he will play a significant role in fighting the undead characters. His figure is wearing his traditional blue and red spider costume, with the addition of a billowing red cape. Check out the live stream below:

In the image overlaying their discussion, eight figures can be seen, which are alternative ‘variant’ versions of the original MCU characters: T’Challa Star-Lord, Heist Nebula, Marvel’s Captain Carter, Zombie Hunter Spidey, Marvel’s Sylvie, Zombie Captain America, Doctor Strange Supreme, and The Watcher. As previous trailers and released footage has shown, zombies will play a part in one – or more – of the alternate realities the What if…? series aims to explore.

In the merchandise, Captain America is a zombified version of himself. Since Spider-Man has been named the zombie hunter, it’s pretty clear that at least one animated episode will involve a fight between these two, who initially came head-to-head in Captain America: Civil War. Spider-Man will probably also be seen hunting down other fellow Avengers and friends who have been infected. Those familiar with the limited series comics that this specific storyline is based on will be aware that the Marvel Zombies stories end tragically. Hence, fans should be prepared to watch their favorite heroes fall.

With multiple Phase 4 projects like Loki and WandaVision opening up the concept of the multiverse, What If…? joins upcoming theatrical releases, Spider-Man: No Way Home and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, in furthering the possibilities open to many of the MCU characters who can travel through the timelines. What If…? will approach these possibilities in a hugely ambitious project, and though many fans can guess at what events the animation will explore, the Spider-Man merch can at least confirm a Marvel Zombies storyline is to be included.
