It looks like the upcoming What If...? series from Marvel will connect to Spider-Man: Far From Home. The new animated series has been highly anticipated by fans since its announcement, with many online theories about what kind of stories the show might tell. With a premise promising endless possibilities, the only actual limit is the 10 episode length of the first season.

Spider-Man: Far From Home premiered in July of 2019, the final film in Phase 3 of the MCU. The film followed Tom Holland's Peter Parker/ Spider-Man adventures as he and his classmates recovered from the events of Avengers: End Game and take a class trip to Europe. After being recruited by Nick Fury, Spider-Man becomes entangled in the plot of a new villain named Mysterio, who wants control of the technology Peter had inherited from Tony Stark. With most of the stars and director Jon Watts returning from Spider-Man: Homecoming, the film was well-received by critics and audiences, who knew it had the arduous tasks of closing out Marvel's Infinity Saga and setting the stage for Phase 4 of the MCU.

According to the Summer 2021 issue of Disney's D23 Magazine obtained by The Direct, Marvel's new What If...? series will have some material in it connected to Spider-Man: Far From Home. Initially, there was some speculation that the rights issues with Sony over the character would preclude the MCU's Spider-Man from being involved in What If...? However, the magazine confirmed the series was definitely "pulling from" Far From Home and the other MCU films. Whether or not that means Spider-Man himself is in the series is another matter entirely.

There has been some speculation about how Marvel Studios may include Peter Parker in the show. The What If...? teaser trailer seemingly features Peter as Hawkeye, but since the glimpse was blurry and difficult to discern, it's unclear whether that's what should be expected. With known Marvel characters taking on different personas in the What If...? series, like Peggy Carter taking the super soldier serum instead of Steve Rogers, that means the mantle of Spider-Man will be open. While there are unconfirmed rumors and speculation about who might be Spider-Man in What If...? it remains to be seen until more footage or images are released.

It only makes sense for What If...? to feature an episode or two with Spider-Man material. Even if Marvel/Disney shares the rights with Sony at the moment, Spider-Man is arguably the most recognizable hero in Marvel comics; he is a big part of bringing in audiences and viewers. Just look at Disney's new Avengers Campus attraction in the theme parks, where the main attraction is a Spider-Man ride called Web Slingers: A Spider-Man Adventure. It just would not be a Marvel project without having some involvement from the friendly neighborhood Spider-Man.
