Peggy Carter steps into Captain America's shoes in the newest poster for Marvel's What If...?. What first looked like a fun experiment for the MCU has become something far bigger in the wake of Loki's season 1 finale. With the Marvel multiverse blown wide open by the developments from that show, What If...? will produce the franchise's first look at what this concept is capable of. The animated series premieres on Disney+ next week, with new episodes arriving every week afterwards.

What If...? will imagine what the MCU would look like if certain events from the movies went a different way. Though the show will feature what feels like every character introduced in the franchise so far, the unofficial face of What If...? has perhaps become Peggy. The first episode will see her take the super-soldier serum instead of Steve Rogers, which paves the way for her to become Captain Carter. Hayley Atwell returns to voice Peggy, and she's already confirmed to play a part in the already-ordered What If...? season 2.

To celebrate What If...?'s release, Marvel has released the first in a series of posters designed specifically for the show. It takes a classic Captain America poster and tears away bits of it to reveal Captain Carter beneath. It's a perfect way of showing how the multiverse is just lingering beneath the MCU fans already know and love. Check it out below.

Steve Rogers will still play a part in What If...?, though he won't be voiced by Chris Evans. It'll be interesting to see how the dynamic between him and Peggy changes, if it does at all. Their love is a key part of Steve's MCU arc, but now that Peggy is the one stepping into the Captain role, there could be adjustments. Steve aside, Peggy was already something of a superhero in her own right in Captain America: The First Avenger and then her ABC series Agent Carter. The main difference now is that What If...? will actually give her powers.

Other MCU characters stepping into new roles for What If...? include T'Challa (Chadwick Boseman), who will become Star-Lord, and Spider-Man, who is confirmed to be a zombie hunter in the series. Those are just a handful examples of the wild places What If...? will go to throughout its first nine episodes. It remains to be seen if the show will bleed into the movies at some point down the line, but for now, everything is contained within this vivid and expansive animated multiverse.
