Warning: This article contains spoilers for What If...? episode 7.

The MCU has already revealed its next big superhero team in Marvel’s What If…?, and they could be even more powerful than the Avengers themselves. What If…? has established several varied and fascinating multiverse branches for the MCU, unveiling wildly different versions of the franchise’s beloved characters. Now, it looks like some of those new Marvel heroes may be joining forces to face a massive MCU threat.

At the end of What If…? episode 7, Thor and Jane Foster decide to go on a date, leading to a sweet and optimistic closing monologue from the Watcher. However, the omniscient being is interrupted by the opening of a strange portal, revealing none other than Ultron wielding the Infinity Stones. Even the Watcher seems surprised by Ultron’s appearance, suggesting it’s a major ripple in the multiverse that could have major repercussions. What If…? season 1 has focused primarily on one-off stories so far, but it looks like that could be changing.

Even before What If…? episode 8 releases, however, Marvel has already spoiled what’s coming: a multiverse Avengers team made up of heroes from the show's previous episodes. Trailer footage has revealed a team that appears to include Party Thor, Black Widow, Hulk, Evil Doctor Strange, and Captain Carter. If Ultron is using the Infinity Stones to traverse and conquer the multiverse, it will make sense for all those different characters to join forces against him, leading to a climactic What If…? season finale. It also allows the Disney+ series to bring back versions of characters that viewers would surely want to see more of.

Ultron uses the infinity Stones in What If

Since the Watcher himself seems shocked by Ultron’s appearance in What If…? episode 7, it’s possible that he could play a role in assembling the new multiverse Avengers in a multi-episode storyline. He’s said before in the show that he’s not a god and that he doesn’t get involved in the affairs of the realities he watches, but that could change if the threat may affect the entire multiverse. Of course, without the multiverse, there would be no need for the Watcher. Until more is revealed about this new version of Ultron, however, it’s not entirely clear what will be necessary to defeat him.

There are also some previously teased What If…? characters who haven’t appeared at all in the show so far, like the version of Gamora, who wields Thanos’ twin-bladed sword. At this point, it’s still possible that she’ll get her own episode, but it’s just as likely that she’ll debut as part of the multiverse Avengers – or possibly even on the side of Ultron. Marvel’s What If…? has set up a lot of exciting possibilities for the end of its first season, and it should be exciting to see how they all play out.
