Several stories have already been revealed for Marvel's Disney+ series, What If...? The upcoming animated series will take a look at alternate scenarios based on characters and events from Marvel's first 23 MCU movies, which together make up the Infinity Saga. The show is one of eight MCU TV series headed to Disney+, and the only one that's animated.

The series is based on Marvel's What If comic, which launched in the late 1970s. Each issue in the popular comic book title featured one to two stories narrated by Uatu the Watcher. Segments in What If showed what would happen in situations where someone other than Peter Parker was bitten by the radioactive spider, and if Captain America hadn't gone into suspended animation in World War II. Some of these stories, like Jane Foster picking up the hammer of Thor, eventually became canon in Marvel Comics.

Consisting of ten episodes, What If...? season 1 is expected to release sometime in 2021. A ten-episode second season is already confirmed to be in development. The animated series boasts an impressive cast with well over a dozen MCU actors reprising their roles, including Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner, Michael Douglas as Hank Pym, and many more. Like the comic, the narrator of the series is Uatu the Watcher, who will be voiced by Jeffrey Wright. Here's every episode that Marvel has revealed (and teased) for its What If...? series.

Peggy Carter Taking The Super Soldier Serum

Peggy Carter Captain Britain

The first episode of What If...? will be an alternate take on Captain America: The First Avenger. In the movie, Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) takes the super soldier serum and becomes Captain America to help the U.S. military in World War II. What If...? changes the story by giving the serum to his love interest in the film, Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell). Trailers and images from the episode show Peggy suited up in a costume decorated in the colors of the British flag. Like Captain America, Peggy will be wielding a shield. The design of her costume has led to theories that What If...?'s Peggy Carter is a gender-swapped Captain Britain (a popular Marvel Comics hero who has yet to appear in the MCU). The episode will also see Peggy team up with skinny Steve Rogers, who will don an oversized Iron Man suit, likely designed by Howard Stark (Dominic Cooper) - another character who is confirmed to be represented in the Disney+ cartoon.

T'Challa as Star-Lord

Marvel What If T'Challa Black Panther Star-Lord

It was explained in Guardians of the Galaxy that as a young boy in the 1980s, Peter Quill was abducted by Yondu (Michael Rooker) and the Ravagers. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 revealed that this was the wish of Peter's father, Ego (Kurt Russell), but Yondu instead trained Quill to be one of the Ravagers. The boy grew up to be Star-Lord (Chris Pratt), the roguish leader of the MCU's Guardians of the Galaxy. Footage from What If...? has shown that the series will devote an episode to what would happen if a different character -- T'Challa (Chadwick Boseman) - became Star-Lord. A brief scene in a trailer reveals Star-Lord unmasking himself to reveal the face of T'Challa, better known as the Black Panther. How this is possible hasn't been explained by Marvel, but since Michael Rooker is part of the show's voice cast, it could be that for whatever reason the Ravagers went to Wakanda and kidnapped the son of King T'Chaka, rather than Quill. How T'Challa will be different as Star-Lord, and if he'll still end up with the same team as Quill in Guardians of the Galaxy remains to be seen.

Winter Soldier vs. Marvel Zombies

A zombie Captain America opens his mouth in Marvel's What If...?

Marvel Zombies is a Marvel Comics miniseries from the mid-2000s set in an alternate reality where the heroes of the Marvel Universe are turned into zombies. The zombie virus spreads until it hits the Avengers, the Fantastic Four, the X-Men, Silver Surfer, and even Galactus. The concept behind the series has been revisited in numerous comics, and is now being adapted to the small screen through What If...? Marvel's trailer for the series previewed a fight between Winter Solider (Sebastian Stan) and a zombified Captain America. The scene recreates the moment from Captain America: The Winter Soldier where Steve chases Bucky onto a roof and throws his shield at him. Bucky grabs the shield in mid-throw, and hurls it back at Steve. The same thing happens in the What If...? version, except this time it would appear that Winter Soldier is the hero of the story. Over the course of the episode, Winter Soldier and perhaps other survivors may have to face off against multiple MCU heroes who have been transformed into zombies.

Other Possible What If...? Episodes

Tom Holland Peter Parker Hawkeye Marvel What If

An image from the teaser trailer shows a person who looks like Tom Holland's Spider-Man carrying a quiver of arrows across his shoulder. This image has created speculation that even though Tom Holland isn't part of show's confirmed voice cast, What If...? will do an episode where Peter Parker becomes Hawkeye. The idea behind the episode could be that even if Parker can't be Spider-Man, he's still destined to become a hero. Another rumored storyline involves Loki (Tom Hiddleston) somehow becoming worthy of Thor's hammer, which could act as a replacement for their original Jane Foster idea. What If...? would have adapted the classic comic where Jane picks up Mjolnir, but Marvel blocked this plan because of Thor: Love and Thunder.

Also, rumors that What If...? will do its own version of Avengers: Infinity War with Thanos killing the other half of the people in the universe is backed up by the inclusion of Josh Brolin in the voice cast. Additionally, an interview with Jeff Goldblum revealed that an unspecified episode will include both Iron Man and Grandmaster (who never met in the MCU). This means the series could replace Thor with Iron Man during the Thor: Ragnarok story. If so, Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson) - or an entirely different character - could capture Iron Man at some point in the timeframe of Avengers: Age of Ultron and take him to Sakaar. There, Iron Man could fight in the gladiator pits, meet Korg (Taika Waititi), and trade blows with Sakaar's champion, the Hulk. Given the number of movies and characters in the MCU, there's no shortage of scenarios that What If...? could tackle.
