In the latest teaser for episode 5 of Marvel's What If...?, the Avengers face off against an army of hungry zombies. The show, which is based on the anthology comics of the same name, is the most recent MCU series to land on Disney+. Through the eyes of the all-knowing Watcher (voiced by Jeffrey Wright), audiences get a glimpse into the expansive multiverse. By making just one different decision, Marvel characters like Doctor Strange, Black Widow, and Captain America unknowingly alter the course of their respective timelines—and are often met with grave consequences.

So far, What If...? has explored just a few of the multiverse's limitless possibilities. Viewers have seen an alternative universe where Peggy Carter was injected with the Super Soldier Serum instead of Steve Rogers, a world where the Avengers never assembled, a reality where T'Challa was captured by Yondu and adopted the moniker of Star-Lord, and a timeline that was destroyed by a heartbroken Stephen Strange. The upcoming episode is based on the fan-favorite Marvel Zombies comic storyline, where the disease-ridden corpse of Galactus infects members of the Avengers, X-Men, and Fantastic Four with the zombie virus. While What If...? seems to be slightly diverging from the events of the comics, some previously revealed merchandise hints that a zombie-hunting Spider-Man might just save the day.

The clip, shared by the official What If...? Twitter account, shows the world's greatest heroes fighting off an army of the undead. Iron Man and Captain America are seen struggling to defeat a swarm of carnivorous zombies but soon find themselves overtaken. Now facing a zombified team of superheroes, the remaining Avengers have to find a way to contain the outbreak. Watch the full trailer below:

Earlier today, Mark Ruffalo shared a clip from the upcoming What If...? episode on Twitter. In the teaser, Bruce Banner is confronted by Ebony Maw and Cull Obsidian in New York. When he tries to summon the Hulk to fight back, he fails. However, he's seemingly saved by Tony Stark and Dr. Strange. But upon closer examination, Bruce discovers something is wrong with his fellow Avengers; they're now flesh-eating zombies. Ruffalo is just one of 50+ Marvel actors who reprised their original role for the animated series. Others include Hayley Atwell as Captain Peggy Carter, Tom Hiddleston as Loki, Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes, and even Josh Brolin as a villain-turned-hero version of Thanos. It seems like the actors had fun lending their voices to the show, and so far, it's proven to be a critical hit for Marvel Studios. A second season has already been confirmed, and will likely hit Disney+ in 2022.

What If...? has had the chance to tackle some outlandish scenarios across the MCU, but the zombie episode might just be the series' craziest yet. Since it's based on such an iconic comic storyline, the zombie episode is perhaps the series' most highly anticipated thus far. But fans of the MCU have plenty more What If...? to look forward to. With 4 more episodes to come after tomorrow's release, there are endless possibilities as to where the show can go. For now, audiences can look forward to seeing the Avengers tackle a zombie outbreak in episode 5 of What If...?, which hits Disney+ on Sept. 8.
