A Funko Pop inspired by Marvel’s animated anthology series, What If…?, on Disney+ reveals an evil version of Doctor Strange. Dr. Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) is nothing if not a reluctant hero in 2016’s Doctor Strange. His origin story sees an accident rob him of his ability to use his hands and, in turn, be an elite neurosurgeon. After exploring every avenue provided by traditional medicine, Strange travels to Kathmandu in hopes of being healed at the mysterious enclave, Kamar-Taj.

Ultimately, Strange meets the Ancient One, becomes a Master of the Mystic Arts, and gets dragged into a battle against Kaecilius and Dormammu. When we see Doctor Strange in Thor: Ragnarok and then Avengers: Infinity War, he’s embraced his role as protector of the New York Sanctum and the Eye of Agamotto, a.k.a. the Time Stone. What if Strange followed a path similar to Kaecilius and never chose to “bargain” with Dormammu? Based on the comics storyline of the same name, the animated What If…? is set to answer the titular question by revisiting key MCU moments and exploring the path not taken. Recently, new details for Doctor Strange’s episode of What If…? revealed an evil Sorcerer Supreme.

What If…? will be narrated by a new character in Uatu the Watcher (Jeffrey Wright), and a handful of MCU characters will be voiced by their original actors. In line with the Funko Pops, confirmed storylines include Peggy Carter becoming Captain America instead of Steve Rogers and T'Challa becoming Star-Lord instead of Peter Quill. According to reports surrounding Doctor Strange’s episode, the show will explore a version of his character that turns to magic following the “death of his true love,” leading him down a dark path to change his past. The show’s trailer shows this version of Strange going against the one fans have come to know.

As Disney+’s Loki and its characters’ exploits with the Time Variance Authority continue to tease the MCU’s multiverse, upcoming films like Spider-Man: No Way Home and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness are not only poised to explore it but both will feature Doctor Strange. What If…? Is actually expected to tie directly into the former but it’s unclear if this Funko Pop version will be seen in the live-action films.
