A new piece of What If…? fan art gives Chris Evans a goatee as Doctor Strange and makes Chris Hemsworth a Hulk. Based on the comic of the same name, What If…? is Marvel Studios’ first animated series on Disney+. The show explores alternate versions of key MCU events and characters. For example, what would happen if Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell) took the Super Soldier Serum instead of Steve Rogers or if Black Panther’s T’Challa (Chadwick Boseman) became Star-Lord?

Some big names like Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Brie Larson, Tom Holland, Scarlett Johansson, and Dave Bautista have not returned to voice their MCU characters. The series’ animated nature allows for endless possibilities in regard to action sequences and stories—the showrunners didn’t want to be limited by whether actors were available/affordable. What If…? has assembled an impressive roster of Marvel actors voicing their respective roles including Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Paul Bettany, Don Cheadle, Paul Rudd, Michael Douglas, Karen Gillan, Sebastian Stan, Hayley Atwell, and many more in a season where basically anything can happen.

Digital artist DGALEXKOVALENKO on Instagram recently shared a What If…? poster alluding to some pretty outrageous scenarios. The piece imagines Robert Downey Jr. as Star-Lord, Chadwick Boseman as Iron Man, Tom Hiddleston as Spider-Man, Chris Hemsworth as the Hulk, Mark Ruffalo/Bruce Banner/the Hulk as Black Panther, and Scarlett Johansson as the God of Thunder. Whether this imagines the aforementioned actors being cast in these roles or their MCU characters taking on different superhero mantels is unclear. Regardless, it’s a fun, satirical piece that embellishes What If…?’s concept. Following its pilot, “What If... Captain Carter Were the First Avenger?” the series is about to showcase a plethora of fascinating alternate realities. How these stories tie into the films remains to be seen.

What If…? was originally thought to be merely an anthology series ala The Twilight Zone. It has since been revealed that the show will have an overarching narrative that ties into the larger MCU. In fact, it will reportedly be as important as any MCU project thus far. The show is narrated by Uatu the Watcher (Jeffrey Wright), who observes (but doesn't interfere) with our solar system’s multiverse. Thanks to Sylvie liberating the Sacred Timeline in Loki for Phase 4, Uatu’s job just got a lot harder and, as was the case in the comics, he may not stay impartial. The Guardians of the Multiverse have already been teased in promotional material; unfortunately, Evans' goatee was not a part of that team.
