Werewolf By Night's importance to the Marvel Cinematic Universe is explained by Marvel Studios President, Kevin Feige. The upcoming Disney+ television horror special will be one of the final entries for the MCU's Phase Four before it concludes with Black Panther: Wakanda Forever in December. Based on the Marvel Comics character of the same name, the special will be directed by famed Academy Award-winning composer for the Pixar film Up, Michael Giacchino.

The movie stars Gael García Bernal as Jack Russell, the titular monstrous character who has been afflicted with a terrible curse that transforms him into a werewolf. Werewolf By Night centers on a clandestine group of monster hunters that reunite following the death of the leader, Ulyssess Bloodstone. To choose a worthy successor, the hunters decide to partake in a competition to find a mysterious artifact when the contest takes a turn for the worse. It's a very unique project for the MCU, leading some to wonder how it will factor into the franchise's longterm plans moving forward.

In a behind-the-scenes featurette for the upcoming television special (via IGN), Feige discussed the importance of Werewolf By Night to the MCU. The producer explained that the show will detail a side of the superhero shared universe rarely seen. Feige also teased that the world introduced in the new movie with become "quite important" to later stories in the MCU. Read what Feige said below:

"We wanted to explore entirely new characters and entirely new sides of the MCU with this unusual fun and frightening spin on the supernatural.

"We're introducing a world that will ultimately become quite important to the future of the MCU."

Although Feige did not provide specifics as to Werewolf By Night's overall significance to the ever-expanding saga, he did hint that what will be covered in the series will lend itself to future installments in the shared universe. The special intends to introduce several of the classic monster-inspired characters of Marvel's pantheon of heroes and villains, but the project will not be the first time such characters were mentioned in the MCU. Vampires were referenced in both Loki and in the latest episode of She-Hulk: Attorney at Law. Moon Knight also recently featured mummies as the series dealt with Ancient Egyptian gods and lore.

However, Werewolf By Night may properly lead into the upcoming Blade film with Mahershala Ali starring as the titular character, a human-vampire hybrid who dedicated his life to hunt down and kill vampires. Although Blade lost its director, as Bassam Tariq abruptly departed right before production was set to begin, the MCU appears to be fully embracing the monster and supernatural side of the Marvel. With Werewolf By Night set to land on Disney+ October 7, audiences do not have to wait much longer to venture into Marvel's world of monster horror.
