Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has revealed that the WandaVision Disney+ TV series will finally see Wanda Maximoff become the Scarlet Witch. Phase 4 of the MCU will see the cinematic universe transform into a true transmedia franchise, with characters and arcs spinning between the movies and Disney+ limited series.

One of the most exciting of these is WandaVision, and Kevin Feige gave attendees at Comic-Con Experience in São Paulo an exclusive first look at this project. Stylistically, WandaVision looks unlike anything in the MCU to date, with 1950s-style costumes and a mysteriously resurrected Vision. Marvel are aware that this TV show is catching fans' imaginations, and as a result they're carefully avoiding giving anything specific away.

But Kevin Feige did offer an intriguing hint while speaking at CCXP (via Omeleteve). He revealed that WandaVision will finally see Wanda Maximoff truly become the Scarlet Witch, and will reveal just what it means for her to claim that title.

"Having the opportunity to tell more of their story, to see more of what Wanda can do, more of what makes Vision Vision, and, most importantly, reveal a name that I'm not even sure we've said in the MCU yet, but we absolutely make a big deal of in the show, which is that Wanda is in fact the Scarlet Witch. What does that mean, that she is the Scarlet Witch? And that's what we play into in this show, in ways that are entirely fun, entirely funny, somewhat scary, and will have repercussions for the entire future Phase 4 of the MCU."

Marvel has been teasing a major retcon for Scarlet Witch for quite some time. The Marvel Studios Visual Dictionary hinted that Wanda's powers don't actually originate from the Mind Stone, but that instead the Infinity Stone simply unlocked her latent abilities. In an interview back in 2016, timed to coincide with the release of Doctor Strange, Feige himself suggested that Marvel was retconning Wanda's powers to be magical in nature. In his view, her abilities are akin to those of the Masters of the Mystic Arts, but they operate on an instinctive level rather than consciously. Supporting this, WandaVision will set Scarlet Witch up for a major role in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. One popular theory is that WandaVision will be the story of how Wanda's mind breaks, setting Scarlet Witch up as the villain of Doctor Strange 2.

But Feige's comments at CCXP is particularly interesting, because it suggests that in the MCU the "Scarlet Witch" could be more than just a codename. There may be comic book precedent for this idea, given that in 2016 writer James Robinson rewrote the history of the Scarlet Witch in her first ongoing series. He revealed that Wanda was born into a line of mystics, and that the titles of Scarlet Witch and Scarlet Warlock ran through her family history. Each Scarlet sorcerer played an important role in the cosmic balance of reality itself, which explained why Wanda's Chaos Magic had such potent effects in the past. Wanda's mother Natalya was an important Scarlet Witch in her own right, and had even worked with members of the Eternals in the past. It's entirely possible Marvel intend to incorporate this into the MCU, given Phase 4 seems to be as concerned with the universe's history as with its future.
