New details have come out about Marvel Studios executive Victoria Alonso's surprising firing. Earlier this week, news broke that Marvel Studios lost Alonso, a prominent producer in the company who was recently promoted to President of Physical, Post Production, VFX and Animation. At that time, specific details of her abrupt departure were uncertain, but new information has come out shedding a light on what actually led to her exit.

Variety, citing three anonymous individuals familiar with the matter, is reporting new information about what really led to Alonso's firing. While the official reason for the termination of her contract remains unclear, the publication shared that the decision was made by several people and departments at Disney. Marvel Studios' fast-paced release schedule, which has gained criticism from the VFX community, is supposedly tied to Alonso being let go from Marvel Studios. Read the related excerpt from the report below:

While the cause of Alonso’s termination is unclear, the sources said, the decision was made by a consortium including human resources, Disney’s legal department and multiple executives including Disney Entertainment co-chairman Alan Bergman (to whom all of Marvel Studios reports). Alonso’s longtime boss and Marvel chief creative officer Kevin Feige felt mired in an impossible situation and, ultimately, did not intervene, one source added. Alonso was blindsided, another insider added.

More Details Revealed About Victoria Alonso's Marvel Studios Exit

According to THR, Alonso's involvement with the Oscar-nominated movie Argentina, 1985 played a major role in her firing from the Disney-owned Marvel Studios. By being an executive producer on the Amazon-distributed Argentina, 1985, Alonso reportedly breached a 2018 agreement stating employees would not work for other studios. Alonso reportedly did not ask Disney for permission to work on Argentina, 1985, but when the company found out, they gave her a dispensation provided she did not continue working on it, or promote it in any way. However, Alonso became a central figure of the movie's campaign, doing interviews and appearing on the Oscars red carpet. Per THR, Disney executives were "rankled" by the fact that Alonso was taking time to promote Argentina, 1985 when her Marvel role overseeing VFX was busier than ever.

Alonso’s attorney, Patty Glaser, released a statement about the executive's involvement in Argentina, 1985 and the role it played in her firing:

The idea that Victoria was fired over a handful of press interviews relating to a personal passion project about human rights and democracy that was nominated for an Oscar and which she got Disney’s blessing to work on is absolutely ridiculous. Victoria, a gay Latina who had the courage to criticize Disney, was silenced. Then she was terminated when she refused to do something she believed was reprehensible. Disney and Marvel made a really poor decision that will have serious consequences. There is a lot more to this story and Victoria will be telling it shortly—in one forum or another.

How Victoria Alonso's Marvel Studios Exit Impacts The MCU's Multiverse Saga

Alonso has yet to comment on her exit, let alone the reason behind it. Disney and Marvel Studios are also remaining mum about the matter. As a prominent member of the organization, producing several projects aside from heading her own department, Alonso had a lot of responsibility, and based on reports, Marvel Studios has yet to hire her replacement. Whether they are planning to bring in someone new to fill that void or promote someone already in the organization is uncertain at this point.

Despite her surprising departure from Marvel Studios, Alonso is still expected to be credited as an executive producer for some of the upcoming projects in the MCU's ongoing Multiverse Saga. That includes films such as James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and the Captain Marvel sequel, The Marvels. In terms of Disney+ shows, Alonso was involved in Secret Invasion, Echo, Ironheart, and Scarlet Witch's comeback project, Agatha: Coven of Chaos.

Alonso's firing comes on the heels of Feige's comment about slowing down MCU's release schedule following a series of disappointing box office hauls and an increasingly vocal VFX community against Marvel Studios. Disney+ shows that were initially set to come out in the next few months have lost their respective premiere windows. It's expected that many, if not all of them, will change roll out schedules.
