According to a synopsis for Issue #1, Jane Foster will fight alongside the former Valkyrie, Dani Moonstar, and Hildengrande against Knull, the God of the Symbiotes as he imposes doom on Midgard. After Eddie Brock and Venom released Knull out of his prison, Knull has only had revenge on his mind. The event will introduce a new Valkyrie, who will be designed by Mattia De Iulis (Valkyrie: Jane Foster). The new Valkyrie whose name remains unknown has debuted in a variant cover for the first issue by Phil Noto. Marvel has teased that the newly introduced Valkyrie will be integral to the rebooted title, as her backstory is going to radically reframe all that readers know about the Asgardians going forward. The synopsis, variant cover, and newly designed Valkyrie can be seen below:

  • King In Black: Return Of The Valkyries #1 (Of 4)
  • Written by Jason Aaron & Torunn Grønbekk
  • Art by Nina Vakyeva
  • Cover by Phil Noto
  • JANE FOSTER RETURNS!
  • Once there was an entire army of Valkyries, but now Jane Foster is the only one. When the King in Black comes to Midgard, Jane must rebuild the Valkyries to help stop him -- starting with Hildegarde, a warrior from Asgard’s own hallowed halls, and X-Man Dani Moonstar, a former Valkyrie herself. But what Jane doesn’t know…is that she never was the only Valkyrie after all. Who is the fourth warrior? Jason Aaron and Torunn Grønbekk team up with artist Nina Vakueva for a story that will rock the foundations of the Marvel Universe!

Tie-ins for King in Black have started to be announced, including a one-shot in which Iron Man and Doctor Doom face Santa Claus, who is being controlled by Knull. The one-shot will be written by Christopher Cantwell (Doctor Doom, Iron Man) and illustrated by Salvador Larroca (Incredible Iron Man, Star Wars: Darth Vader) releasing in December, just in time for the upcoming Christmas season. With such a whacky crossover setting the tone for the global crisis event, it’s anyone’s guess as to what can be expected throughout other tie-ins, which will include the Thunderbolts, Black Knight, Gwenom, Daredevil, Guardians of the Galaxy, Deadpool, S.W.O.R.D, Savage Avengers, and the Valkyries.

The four-part event promises to shake up the Marvel Universe, as the rebooted Valkyries take center stage against the Symbiote God, Knull. The inclusion of Jane Foster in such a pivotal role might allude to potential plans for how she will be depicted in the MCU. The new Valkyrie could also point to the future of Tessa Thompson's Valkyrie. King in Black: Return of the Valkyries is set to release in January 2021.
