Marvel’s The Defenders Working Title Revealed

The Defenders - Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist

News recently hit that Netflix subscription growth is through the roof and with a ton of regularly dropping new content it's easy to see why. In addition to breakout hits like House of Cards, Orange is the New Black, and Stranger Things, the streaming service is slowly building an entire street-level, television sub-universe to Marvel Studios' immensely popular films. With four well received seasons out the door already (Daredevil seasons 1 and 2, Jessica Jones, and Luke Cage) Netflix now has Iron Fist, the four hero team-up of The Defenders, and a solo Punisher spinoff in active production.

While filming, every Netflix series has had a working title - a code name to prevent passersby from showing too much interest and potentially disrupting the production. The first was "Bluff" (Daredevil - S1), then "Violet" (Jessica Jones), "Ringside" (Daredevil - S2), "Tiara" (Luke Cage), "Kick" (Iron Fist), and more recently, "Crime" (The Punisher).

With filming of The Defenders nearly ready to begin, Production Weekly has unveiled the new series' working title will be "Group Therapy."

Marvel/Netflix The Defenders details

Seemingly a riff The Avengers' own working title, "Group Hug," this title definitely suggests that the four, flawed Defenders are going to have some issues to work through together before they gel into a cohesive team. This makes a lot of sense considering where they all left off. Matt Murdock, a.k.a. Daredevil, ended his last season after driving away or otherwise losing everyone important to him. When we last saw Jessica Jones, she had tied up a major loose end in her own life but managed to unravel a few more (including her relationship with Luke Cage). At the end of his own season, Luke had settled some scores in Harlem but his past still managed to catch up with him. While Danny Rand, a.k.a. Iron Fist, is still an unknown element, it's a fair bet that even if he heads into The Defenders in a well-adjusted state, the team is going to have plenty of emotional baggage to sort through.
