Marvel's Superman, Hyperion, has become Earth's Mightiest Hero in the Heroes Reborn universe, but it has come at a great personal cost. In Heroes Reborn: Hyperion & The Imperial Guard, Marcus Milton's earlier days of training with the Shi'ar Imperial Guard is shown. But, on one last mission before returning to Earth, he not only lost his closest allies but the one person he cared about more than anyone else.
The Squadron Supreme - who were created as pastiches of DC's Justice League heroes - has mysteriously replaced the Avengers as the champions of the Marvel Universe in the current Heroes Reborn timeline. Blade is the only person in the new reality who remembers the Avengers and makes it his personal quest to restore the world back to its proper place. In his quest, he's unthawed Captain America from ice and learned the hero is the biggest weakness to Hyperion. Still, Hyperion, whose powers and origin are similar to Superman's, has some sort of special control of the new reality, and taking him down won't be easy.
In Heroes Reborn: Hyperion & The Imperial Guard #1 by Ryan Cady, Michele Bandini, Elisabetta D'Amico, Erick Arciniega, and VC's Cory Petit, the event takes a look back in time to Hyperion's time with Shi'ar Empire's Imperial Guard. In the story, Hyperion is about to return to earth after the Imperial Guard defeated their biggest enemy, Deathbird. But, before he heads back the team goes on one last mission together to raid her secretive hideout and ensure there are no loose ends with the villain. On the mission, Hyperion is told by his teammate and partner Oracle she is going to go with him to Earth, but as she reveals the good news the team is overcome by the Brood. Knowing the evil alien race can't escape, Hyperion is forced to close the barrier before the Brood break free and devour the entire galaxy.
Hyperion watches his closest friends and partner be overcome by the Brood and is forced to use his immense powers to close the barrier to the planet for good. Hyperion cries out in agony as he floats on debris. The comic describes his soul abandoning him in the moment and the hero feeling completely alone.
The tragedy certainly helps explain Hyperion's turn towards distrust and evilness, despite being the strongest hero in the Heroes Reborn universe. He was forced to kill his family to ensure the Marvel Universe wouldn't be infected by the Brood. Obviously, it's a day that changed Hyperion forever. The comic adds much-needed layers to Hyperion's mindset, as he's already lost everything he cares about once - he's not going to let it happen again.
