A new Marvel Studios show for Disney+ has been announced titled Marvel Studios: Legends. Kevin Feige has just provided an update regarding the MCU's future via the recently-concluded Disney Investor Day where he also announced a string of new projects. Not long after that, however, the company has a surprise small-screen project set to debut in January 2021.
Due to the coronavirus pandemic, Marvel Studios was forced to skip 2020 altogether after a series of slate shifts and reschedules. WandaVision is set to kick things off for Phase 4 on the small screen on January 15, while Black Widow will do the same for their movie line-up a few months later in May. But before all that, the company will roll out a refresher show that will recap the heroes' journeys in the MCU just before they continue their arcs through their respective projects.
Announced on Marvel.com is Marvel Studios: Legends. The show is described as "a new series that will showcase individual characters viewers have come to know and love over the years and revisit some of their most iconic moments." In addition, Legends "celebrates and codifies what has come before" as it continues to expand with a string of TV and movie endeavors moving forward. It will premiere on January 8, 2021 with two episodes focused on Wanda and Vision, functioning as a primer to WandaVision which debuts a week later.
Considering the circumstances, Legends is a great way to offer MCU fans new content at this point where production capacity is still not back at its normal rate due to the coronavirus pandemic. Since it primarily features footage from previous films and perhaps additional commentary from the actors and other franchise personnel, it's fairly easy to produce. On top of that, a refresher may also be useful at this point given the extended MCU hiatus has been in since the end of the Infinity Saga. More importantly, however, Legends could be used as a good resource material for casual viewers who may be looking to get into the franchise late in the game, or even just check out some of its new TV shows to make the most of their Disney+ subscriptions.
From the sound of it, Marvel Studios: Legends will only tackle characters who are scheduled to star in their own Disney+ series. While that makes sense for shows like WandaVision, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, and Loki since those feature heroes who have already been in the MCU, it's curious what they'll do with series like She-Hulk, Ms. Marvel, Ironheart, and Moon Knight. Perhaps they can recap those new character's comic book origins just to give viewers an idea about their background, otherwise, the concept of the new project doesn't really apply to them.
