Marvel always dubbed the team Earth's Mightiest Heroes and from the start, and that is the goal the Avengers have strived to reach. From the start, the team consisted of the most powerful heroes in Marvel. Through the years,  offshoots have popped up and the team went from government-regulated heroes to independent superheroes, but the line-ups have always been high powered.

The Avengers are a who's who of superheroes, and anyone who is anyone has been a member of the team in one way or another. While other superteams have come and gone, The Avengers have always sat at the head of the table in the Marvel Universe. With almost 60 years of history, here is a look at the 10 strongest Avengers teams of all time.

the ORIGINAL AVENGERS

While they don't match up with line-ups from future generations, there is no making a list about the strongest Avengers teams of all-time without mentioning the original group. The idea was to create a team similar to that of the Justice League, with the strongest heroes in Marvel Comics teaming up against a villain too strong for one hero to beat.

In this case, it was a Loki-controlled Hulk and the team included the strongest heroes of the era -- Iron Man, Thor, Ant-Man and the Wasp. Hulk ended up shaking Loki's control and joined as well. Hulk quickly left, replaced by Captain America and the team seemed even stronger. This is the line-up that has been the core since their debut.

the YOUNG AVENGERS

The 10 Strongest Avengers Teams, ranked

Marvel really worked for a while on making their core heroes younger (in order to appeal to a fresh audience with new characters) and that carried over to The Avengers. When it comes to the Young Avengers, they were formed when Iron Lad arrived from the future to try to stop none other than Kang the Conqueror -- one of the biggest bad guys in Marvel Comics.

The team he put together was very powerful and very young. It included Wiccan, Patriot, Kate Bishop's Hawkeye, Hulkling and Ant-Man's daughter, Cassie Lang. They were great together and have since become powerful heroes in their own right, even though elder statesmen like Captain America and Iron Man were not keen on them remaining a team.

the SAVAGE AVENGERS

The 10 Strongest Avengers Teams, ranked

The Savage Avengers have not been together long enough to really make a case for their standing. However, depending on how their initial adventures play out, they have the manpower to really move up this list (and the dysfunction to fall off it completely). The first issue of their new comic saw the time-displaced Conan the Barbarian fighting Wolverine.

It only gets better from there. Outside of those two heavy hitters, there is also the addition of Doctor Voodoo, Punisher, Elektra and Venom, so this team has a chance to be one of the strongest Avengers teams ever... as long as they don't kill each other first.

the SECRET AVENGERS

The 10 Strongest Avengers Teams, ranked

The Secret Avengers were an interesting proposition -- a black ops unit that dealt with things that the public face of the Avengers dared not approach. The fact that the former Captain America Steve Rogers led the way proves how strong this team had a chance of being.

The initial line-up was impressive, with War Machine, Black Widow, Moon Knight, Nova, Beast, Sharon Carter, Ant-Man, Valkyrie and Beast. They got even stronger when Hawkeye took Rogers' place as the team leader and brought in Agent Venom, Captain Britain and the android Human Torch as new members.

the AVENGERS: UNITY DIVISION

The 10 Strongest Avengers Teams, ranked

After the events of Avengers vs. X-Men, Captain America realized he hadn't done enough to stand up for mutants as they were persecuted through the years. As a result, he chose to integrate mutants into the Avengers teams publicly, and this included Avengers Unity Division.

The team has some major muscle behind it and was an extremely strong version of the Avengers. Included from the mutant side was Rogue, Deadpool, Quicksilver and Cable. On the Avengers side was Spider-Man, Human Torch, Doctor Voodoo, and Synapse. They had some big adventures but the main lure here was the inner strife between the members.

the ULTIMATES

The 10 Strongest Avengers Teams, ranked

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is based more on the Ultimates than the Avengers -- at least in many areas. Nick Fury in the Ultimate Marvel Universe is basically Samuel L. Jackson. The Ultimates included Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, Hawkeye, Giant-Man and Hulk. It also later introduced Quicksilver, Scarlet Witch and Wasp -- so the line-ups are very similar.

However, the movies did follow the more heroic virtues of the main Marvel Universe, as the Ultimates were more government weapons (who had no moral line they would not cross) and Cap was kind of a jerk. However, this was a team that was very powerful and would do anything to win.

The ASTONISHING AVENGERS

The 10 Strongest Avengers Teams, ranked

The events of Axis caused an inversion that turned superheroes into villains and villains into heroes. It was a fascinating look at a major "what if?" in Marvel history. The Avengers were then a team that included the worst villains in history -- all acting as heroes -- and that made this an extremely strong team.

The leader was Magneto and it also included Doctor Doom, so that right there gives it some major firepower. Add in Carnage, Mystique, Enchantress, Jask'O Lantern and Sabretooth and this team can stand toe-to-toe with just about any Avengers lineup.

the HEROES RETURN

Avengers from Heroes Return in Marvel Comics

The Avengers broke up for a while, and when they finally reunited it was (just like the first time they joined forces) to battle an enemy that was too strong for any one hero to compare to. The enemy was Morgan le Fay and her ability to warp reality, and they needed all hands on deck to defeat her.

This team included some of the heaviest hitters in Avengers history, including Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, Scarlet Witch, Binary, Namor, Spectrum, Quasar, and many more. They dropped back down to a more basic power set after this battle but this team was easily the biggest in Avengers history.

the AVENGERS MACHINE

The 10 Strongest Avengers Teams, ranked

When Jonathan Hickman took over the Avengers in 2012, he started to put together and build the story that became Secret Wars (and did a lot of work to set up the building blocks along the way). One of his most interesting creations was the Avengers Machine, which was created to build the strongest Avengers team in history.

The problem is that there was never really a completed version of it, or it could easily sit at number one on any list of the strongest Avengers teams. Take a look at the members of this machine -- Iron Man, Hulk, Captain America, Captain Marvel, Shang-Chi, Spider-Man, Wolverine, Sunspot, Thor, Hyperion, Captain Universe, and many more. This was ambitious and very, very powerful team.

the NEW AVENGERS

The 10 Strongest Avengers Teams, ranked

The New Avengers debuted in 2005, seeing some of the strongest heroes in the Marvel Universe join the team to create arguably the strongest version of The Avengers ever. This was a team that was finally separate from the government -- which meant no government funding, but a more open-door policy on who joined.

This team included Luke Cage, Wolverine, Iron Man, Captain America, Sentry, Spider-Man and Spider-Woman. They had some big challenges, battling Hydra, the Hand, and the Collective, and were successful throughout the years. Probably the strongest Avengers line-up of all-time.
