Marvel keeps changing the MCU's strongest hero -- and don't expect that to stop anytime soon, thanks to the Eternals movie, which will introduce not one, but two contenders for the title. The current holder of the title is Elizabeth Olsen's Scarlet Witch, but she may soon be facing competition in the form of two incredibly powerful Eternals.

For years, it was understood by fans that either Thor (Chris Hemsworth) or Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) was the MCU's strongest hero. Arguments could be made for either one. Later, a third character entered the conversation when Kevin Feige and others at Marvel Studios began to consistently label Captain Marvel (Brie Larson) as the MCU's strongest character, despite the fact that in the comics, Captain Marvel isn't on the same level as Thor and Hulk. This description of Carol Danvers stuck for quite a while, until it was suddenly announced by Feige that the MCU's strongest her is Scarlet Witch, who will appear in both WandaVision and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. It's even been stated that Scarlet Witch could have defeated Thanos one-on-one.

There's no debating that Scarlet Witch is one of Marvel's most powerful characters, both in the MCU and in the comic books. But, Marvel's Eternals movie is about to introduce an entire team of characters who possess numerous powers, including flight, super strength, the ability to fire cosmic energy from their eyes and hands, telepathy, and more. Since they have a shared set of powers, every Eternal is a force to be reckoned with in Marvel Comics, and for this reason, any one of them would be a challenge for Thor, Hulk, Captain Marvel, or Scarlet Witch. Since even an average Eternal is capable of holding their own against the Avengers, it's possible that the strongest of the Eternals -- Sersi (Gemma Chan) and Gilgamesh (Don Lee) -- may in fact be the MCU's most powerful heroes, and not Scarlet Witch or Captain Marvel.

Physically, Gilgamesh is in the top tier of Marvel's strongest characters. He's been shown to be on the same playing field as heroes like Thor, Hulk, and Hercules. In a one-on-one match, Gilgamesh pushed Thor to his limit, and only lost because he made the mistake of trying to pick up Mjolnir. Thor barely won, and after his victory, he realized that at the time Gilgamesh was blind, which meant that the fight wasn't even fair. Gilgamesh's strength is impressive on its own, but factor in every other ability he has as an Eternal and it's not hard to see him being the MCU's most powerful character.

There's also Sersi. Like all Eternals, Sersi can manipulate matter, except she can do so on a grand scale unmatched by any of her race. She can completely reshape anything into whatever she pleases. Sersi once turned an Eternal into an aardvark, which is a testament of her transmutation abilities. After joining the Avengers, it was revealed just how powerful Sersi can be. When certain events threatened Sersi's emotional and mental stability, it was discovered that Sersi had the potential for limitless destruction, which likened her to the X-Men's Dark Phoenix. It was her relationship with the Black Knight that kept her in line. Since set photos of Black Knight and Sersi indicate that Eternals is adapting the Black Knight-Sersi romance, the MCU may be building toward that story.

Sersi and Gilgamesh are two of the three Eternals in Marvel Comics who can be counted as Avengers, and Marvel may big plans for one or both of them beyond Eternals. Depending on how the MCU chooses to adapt their powers, either one could be a good candidate to take Scarlet Witch's place as Marvel's strongest character.
