Tom Holland's third Spider-Man film will officially feature the return of Zendaya as Michelle 'MJ' Jones. With Phase 4 getting ready to kick-off for the MCU through Black Widow, other Marvel pictures are either in the middle or close to beginning principal photography. Peter Parker's status in Marvel Studios' cinematic universe was uncertain when Sony Pictures and Disney initially concluded their partnership after Spider-Man: Far From Home. But after the massive negative reception to severing ties on their collaboration, the two studios came to a new deal that would allow the current iteration of Spider-Man to continue within the realm of the MCU.

The second film, which made $1.132 billion at the box office, was one of the largest stories in Marvel's third phase. After a massive battle against the villainous Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal), the ending to Far: From Home had Peter face his biggest challenge yet. Despite taking down Quentin Beck, the iconic Spidey foe had one final surprise for the titular hero. Through manipulated footage, Mysterio made Spider-Man a public enemy by framing him for Quentin's death in the Spider-Man: Far From Home post-credits scene. In the midst of it, he outed Peter as the beloved Avengers member, which left Peter terrified before the movie cut to black. While little is known about the third movie, another original Spider-Man: Homecoming cast member is reprising their role.

In an interview with the Inquirer, Holland confirmed that Zendaya, who plays MJ, will be back for the third installment. Following the confirmation that the untitled Spider-Man 3 will begin shooting in July, more details on other cast members are bound to come out. In the last film, Peter and MJ's relationship developed even more as she revealed she already knew he's Spider-Man. MJ is there at the ending when the Daily Bugle unveiled Quentin's manipulated footage that outs Peter as the friendly neighborhood hero. When asked about the status of MJ and Peter's relationship, Holland had quite an ambiguous answer:

In Spider-Man 3, Zendaya will most definitely be in the film. As to the relationship between Peter and MJ, I’m not too sure what it will be.

Even though Quentin was seemingly killed off in the events of the last film, his actions are what will primarily drive the third story. While it has yet to be revealed who will be the big bad in this one, Peter's biggest task will mostly have to do with clearing his name as his secret identity has not only been outed, but compromised. It also remains to be seen if the events of Far From Home will be greatly explored in Sony Pictures' Morbius. Given the Spider-Man "Murderer" graffiti and Michael Keaton's cameo as Vulture, the Jared Leto-starring film might give some clues to what's currently going on with Peter after his recent film.

While production is slated for summer, it remains to be seen if those plans stick. Given the coronavirus pandemic, several productions are being suspended even before they can begin. A fellow upcoming MCU film that has been affected is Shang-Chi and the Legends of the Ten Rings with director Destin Cretton being tested for the viral disease. Things might look different by the time it gets to July, but right now it might be possible that production will not even begin. However the studios choose to act, fans can at least look forward to Zendaya reprising her character in the untitled Spider-Man 3.
