Insomniac Games' Spider-Man for PS4 is gaining some serious traction ahead of its release later this year, and it looks like an impressive Collector's Edition is just another reason to buy.

Game Informer already teased some exclusive details on what gamers can expect when Spider-Man comes swinging onto our screens, but Peter Parker is finally ready to take off his mask and reveal his latest console adventure to the world. Taking the wall-crawling hero to the expansive streets of New York City, Spider-Man old and new will come together in one of 2018's biggest games. However, if the most exciting Spider-Man game to date wasn't enough to get excited about, PlayStation has dropped some big news about the Collector's Edition.

The PlayStation site has revealed the official release date for Spider-Man along with three options to buy. As well as the standard game, fans can pick up a Digital Deluxe version with some exclusive DLCs and skins for Spidey to wear in the game. However, for those wanting to part with a little more cash, the Collector's Edition is promising something a little more special. For $149.99 there will be a statue of the superhero courtesy of Gentle Giant, a custom Steelbook, and a never-before-seen book showcasing the artwork of the game. There will also be a Spider-Man PSN Avatar, unlockable Spider-Man drone gadget, and white spider sticker.

In-game skins may be enough to tempt some to pay a little more, but it is undoubtedly the other extras that will really shift copies of the game. Importantly, both the Deluxe and Collector's Editions will come with three additional levels called “The City That Never Sleeps". At nearly double the price, it might seem hard to justify the Collector's Edition, but with Spider-Man promising to be a huge gaming event, fans of Web-Head will undoubtedly see it as a sound investment.

Comic book video games may have a complicated history on PC and consoles. However, alongside the likes of Rocksteady's Arkham games, superhero franchises are having a resurgence in the industry. Spider-Man not only marks the character's first game since The Amazing Spider-Man 2 in 2014, but it is set to open the door to a whole new era of games based on the increasingly popular roster of Marvel heroes and villains.

With cinematic cut scenes, the feeling of leaping across the New York skyline, and a brand new story using the comics as source material, Spider-Man is at least a glossy game if nothing else. Here's hoping that Insomniac can do what Rocksteady did and reinvent the iconic comic book hero for a whole new generation of players. At least the Collector's Edition will make it look just as impressive as the graphics when sitting next to the PS4.
