The upcoming Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is going to take so long to develop because of how large it is, at least according to the voice of Venom himself. Horror and comic book fans will recognize Tony Todd from his roles as the murderous speedster Zoom in The Flash and the titular killer in the original Candyman movies, and it was recently confirmed that he will be bringing his signature deep, gravelly tone to the next chapter of Insomniac’s critically-acclaimed line of superhero sandbox titles.
Since Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 was only confirmed during Sony's PlayStation Showcase livestream this past Thursday, very little is known about what Insomniac has in store for fans with this next spider-powered adventure. It can be assumed that Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 will feature a large open-world version of New York City, as was the case with 2018's Marvel’s Spider-Man and its 2018 spin-off, Spider-Man: Miles Morales. Both these games featured a lot of great post-game content for fans of Peter Parker and Miles Morales, from a wide assortment of street crimes to thwart and gang hideouts to infiltrate to plenty of tall buildings and street corners to swing across like only a spider can. It’s still going to be some time before players can experience those same thrills in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, and Tony Todd says there’s a really good reason for that.
As reported by GamesRadar, voice actor Tony Todd was asked about his upcoming role as Venom in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 on Twitter a couple of days ago. In his response, he noted that the game is “massive,” citing that fact as the reason why it won’t be coming out until 2023. Todd also mentioned that he was only hired on as the voice of the iconic symbiote very recently, stating that he wasn’t aware of the part until two months ago.
Venom’s involvement in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 was teased in the post-credits scenes of both its immediate predecessors, with the added twist that it will be Harry Osborn instead of Eddie Brock that will don the iconic black symbiote. Thursday's Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 trailer also suggested that longtime Spider-Man baddie Kraven The Hunter will have a major role in the new game, and fans are suggesting that Venom might be a playable character along with the expected Peter and Miles.
Insomniac’s previous Spider-Man games were fairly large and packed with content, so the idea of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 possibly being even bigger is an exciting prospect for players who are excited to hear Tony Todd’s chilling take on Venom. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 isn’t set to launch until sometime in 2023, but if what Todd says is true it might very well be worth the wait.
