Marvel's She-Hulk Show Will Reportedly Feature Comics Accurate Origin Story

Marvel's upcoming Disney+ series She-Hulk will reportedly cover Jennifer Walters' origin story as it is shown in the comics. The series was announced back in the summer of 2019 at D23, along with other upcoming series like Ms. Marvel and Moon Knight. Jessica Gao, who's written for Rick and Morty and Silicon Valley, is head writer. There has been no other news of the creative team or the cast, though reports say production on She-Hulk will begin this July in Atlanta.

She-Hulk's real name is Jennifer Walters. She is Bruce Banner's cousin and works professionally as a lawyer. Her first appearance in a Marvel comic was back in 1980, in Savage She-Hulk #1. In the initial story, Walters is injured, and in order to help her, Banner gives her a blood transfusion. This results in her gaining a milder version of his Hulk condition. Over the years, she's been a member of the Avengers, A-Force, and even subbed in for the Fantastic Four. At the same time, she's slowly grown to be one of the strongest and most powerful Marvel characters, to possibly rival Captain Marvel and Scarlet Witch.

According to The Illuminerdi, casting descriptions reveal details of the Disney+ series' plot direction. Marvel is said to be looking for an actress to play the lead character who can do comedy and is within the ages of 26-34. The casting of Walters is open to all races, meaning there are plenty of possibilities for who could take on the character. As for the storyline, the description specifically mentions Banner and that she will receive her abilities via a blood transplant from him after being shot. Going even further, the description states that Walters is "a future member of the Avengers," hinting at the story staying very close to the comic books, even well into the future.

The reference to the Avengers means that Walters is definitely going to make the jump into Marvel films soon after the show, just like Ms. Marvel and Moon Knight. Many people have voiced interest in playing Walters, like Brooklyn 99's Stephanie Beatriz, a casting that is heavily supported by fans. Given that Banner is a key part of She-Hulk's origin story, Mark Ruffalo is likely to make an appearance. It's also rumored that Liv Tyler, who played Betty Ross in The Incredible Hulk, might reprise her role in the She-Hulk series. William Hurt, who plays Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" Ross (Betty's father) and has appeared in multiple Marvel films, including the upcoming Black Widow, will reportedly return in the series as well.

But before She-Hulk gets close to landing on Disney+, both The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and WandaVision will premiere on the streamer later this year. The former series just wrapped filming and is scheduled to be released in August, while WandaVision is coming in December. With all of these projects, there's such great potential for the future of Marvel TV. They now have the ability to actively control and connect the television series to the MCU. This means that Marvel can now successfully interweave all the stories together the way the comics do, and even bring back fan favorite characters like Daredevil. Walters is a capable and powerful character from the comics. If She-Hulk goes well, she's sure to become a long-standing favorite on our screens.
