Game of Thrones' Emilia Clarke is heading to the MCU with a starring role in the upcoming Disney+ series Secret Invasion. The show will be adapting the comics arc of the same name that sees the alien race of Skrulls use their shapeshifting abilities to infiltrate the earth and impersonate some of Marvel's most iconic characters. The Skrulls played a prominent role in 2019's Captain Marvel and have appeared sporadically in the MCU since then.

Secret Invasion is set to bring back both Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury and Ben Mendelsohn as Talos, a member of the Skrull race. As filming approaches ahead of what is likely a 2022 debut, the cast of the series has begun to take shape. Kingsley Ben-Adir of One Night in Miami has been cast in a villainous role and The Crown's Olivia Colman was recently revealed to be in negotiations for a role as well. Details surrounding their characters remain under wraps, but Secret Invasion has added yet another high-profile cast member to its roster.

Variety reports that Daenerys Targaryen herself is joining the MCU, with Emilia Clarke having been cast in the series. Naturally, details surrounding Clarke's role remain under wraps and neither Marvel nor Clarke's reps commented on the announcement.

Captain Marvel - Skrulls

With the addition of Clarke, Secret Invasion is set to have one of the most star-studded casts of Marvel's Disney+ series, introducing a slew of new characters with formidable actors in the roles. Whether or not they'll be appearing as Skrulls or Skrulls in disguise remains to be seen, but it's safe to say that Marvel wouldn't waste actresses like Colman and Clarke in roles with heavy makeup, at least for the majority of their screen time. Amidst all these new cast members, though, remains one question: which heroes will be appearing as Skrulls in disguise?

Captain Marvel's close alignment with the Skrulls certainly indicates she could be involved in Secret Invasion in some capacity. WandaVision's post-credits scene also seems to hint that Teyonah Parris' Monica Rambeau is a part of the series, as well. The possibilities are really endless with the series, but it's clear that, first and foremost, Marvel is looking to build an incredible cast that could draw just as much attention as already established characters. Secret Invasion is reportedly set to begin filming this fall, making it an integral part of Marvel's 2022 slate. Whether or not it ties into the theatrical side of things is a mystery, but with such a pivotal arc from the comics, the effects of the series could be felt throughout the entire MCU.
