Sebastian Stan shared a photo on his Instagram account referencing the anniversary of Howard Stark’s death in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. With over ten films in its connected universe, Marvel Studios has brought to life some of Marvel Comics' most beloved characters and has given us the chance to delve into their backstories, as tragic as some of them might be.

The cast from the MCU is mostly known for taking the best traits of their characters beyond the big screen. For instance, Chris Evans constantly goes into Captain America mode on social media to take a stand on various political and social issues (and lend a hand when needed). Plus, they use their good sense of humour to either make fun of themselves (as Tom Holland usually does, most recently when he revealed the official Avengers: Infinity War poster) or make reference to some of the actions from their characters – just like Stan and his Instagram post commemorating the assassination of Howard Stark.

Through his official Instagram account, Stan (who plays Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier) shared a photo of himself, in a facepalm pose, with some of Iron Man’s armor on the background. At first, it might look like Stan is just having a tough time visiting the chambers of the enemy (after all, he is Team Captain America), but the caption accompanying the image is the real game-changer: “December 16th, 1991”, the day Howard and Maria Stark were killed by the Winter Soldier.

In Captain America: Civil War it was confirmed that the Winter Soldier is responsible for Howard and Maria Stark’s deaths, having acted under orders of HYDRA with the intention of getting samples of the Super Soldier Serum. The assassination was orchestrated to look like a car accident. Helmut Zemo (played by Daniel Brühl) later showed the footage of the “accident” to Tony Stark, prompting him to turn on Captain America and Bucky, even dismembering Barnes’ robotic arm.

Bucky Barnes and Tony Stark will meet again in Avengers: Infinity War along with most of the heroes from the MCU up to date to face Thanos, who has been collecting the Infinity Stones for the Infinity Gauntlet, which will allow him immense power. The Avengers: Infinity War trailer didn’t show a reunion between Stark and Barnes, but it will be interesting to see how that meeting will play out after what happened in Civil War – more so with such strong personalities from both Barnes and Stark.

The cast from the MCU also tend to interact with each other on social media quite often, and given that Stan tagged Robert Downey Jr in the post shown above, we’ll just have to wait and see if Tony Stark himself has something to say about it.
